Gifu Prefecture consists of the old provinces of Hida and Mino.
The towns and villages participating in this merger were, from Ono District, Asahi, Kiyomi, Kuguno, Miya, Nyukawa, Shokawa, and Takane, and, from Yoshiki District, Kamitakara and Kokufu.
Gifu's economy includes many traditional industries such as agriculture and woodworking, but it is dominated by manufacturing industries extending from the Nagoya area, such as aerospace and automotive industry.

DATELINE: GIFU, Japan, April 8 Kyodo: Fossils of two different kinds of pterodactyls, or flying reptiles, have been found in Gifu Prefecture, central Japan, and one of them is likely to be a new kind of pterodactyl, local officials said Wednesday.
The board of education in Shokawa, a village in Gifu Prefecture, said a British expert on dinosaurs informed the board earlier this month that he has confirmed the two fossils were of two different kinds of pterodactyls.
The fossils were discovered by Shizuo Shimojima, 44, an employee of the board, and his son Tomohito, 14, in Shokawa between September 1996 and May 1997, the officials said.

While technically I am to be in Takayama, I am actually living and teaching in a tiny village called Shokawa, which has a population a skosh under 1,500 people.
In addition Takayama proper, and access to the train lines, is a 45 minutes drive from Shokawa.
Google Earth shows Shokawa as a strip of gray on the side of a mountaintop.
