New Sholay - Ram Gopal Varma
It is okay he wanted to call his film Ramgopal Varma’s Sholay when initially he had planned to make the remake of Sholay and the Sippys had raised a valid objection because he had not bought the rights from the Sippys who were naturally miffed.
How is Nandy going to remake Sholay now remains to be seen since he has not announced who the director is going to be and who  the actors are who are going to play the legendary characters of Gabbar Singh, Veeru and Jai or for that matter Thakur.
Yesteryear dream girl Hema Malini, who dazzled in the role of ‘Basanti’ in the cult classic Sholay, says that it is impossible to recreate such a classic.Talking to newspersons after inaugurating a jewellery showroom in Bangalore on Wednesday, she said it could happen only once and any such attempt would end up as mere imitations.

 Filmi Geek: Sholay (1975)
Sholay is sometimes called the first “curry western,” a parallel to the term “spaghetti western,” as it ushered in a spate of cowboy-type films.
Sholay tells the tale of two career crooks Jai and Veeru (Amitabh Bachchan and 70s heartthrob Dharmendra) pressed into service by a retired police officer and landowner (Sanjeev Kumar) to flush out a local thug, Gabbar Singh (Amjad Khan) who is terrorizing the villagers with his peculiarly sadistic brand of extortion and banditry.
Sholay may be an unconventional choice as a first Bollywood film – my virtual friends over at BollyWHAT?’s discussion board tend to introduce their friends to Hindi cinema by way of the modern weepies with their dreamy romance and big-time production numbers.

The Illuminated Lantern - Asian Cinema Reviews: Sholay
When SHOLAY was released in 1975, it broke box office records, and even today, if you adjust for inflation, it is the biggest box office earner of all time.
SHOLAY spends too much time with our heroes Veeru and Jai before they are even brought to the village -- they hatch a scheme to collect their own reward money and end up in a jail run by a comical Hitler character.
SHOLAY has some fantastic moments -- moments so great you start to forget that you are watching the same movie that featured a comical Hitler character earlier.

 Manas: Culture, Indian Cinema: Sholay
Often described as India's best-known "curry" western, Sholay was 'patterned' on American spaghetti westerns, though as with any other good Hindi film, the presumed 'copy' is at least as interesting as the 'original'.
One of the long opening scenes, which shows a train being defended by Baldev Singh against an attack by bandits, is quite spectacular in its effects, and is reminiscent of similar scenes in westerns, most notably John Ford's "Stagecoach" (1939).
Sholay, likewise, plays upon themes of nature versus culture, the encroachment of nature upon culture, and the meaning of civilization in wilderness.

Video Scene: Sholay alternative ending - RS Bollywood Online
Sholay was India’s first 70mm widescreen film and also boasted stereophonic sound.
However, since actual 70mm cameras were deemed too expensive to be used to shoot the epic actioner, the movie instead was shot on traditional 35mm film and the 4:3 picture was subsequently blown up, cropped and matted to a 2.20:1 frame.
In the weeks leading up to Sholay’s premiere, India’s censor board revealed that they were refusing to clear the film for release as they objected to its violent final scene and ordered director Ramesh Sippy to shoot a more ’sanitised’ climax if he wanted his hard work to make it to the cinema halls.

 Sholay
Sholay became a legend, and by far the most successful film of its time, which ran for five consecutive years in a theatre in Bombay.
Ironically the film opened to a lukewarm response and distributors asked the director to trim the film because of its length but soon the word of mouth spread and the rest as the cliché goes is history.
Perhaps Sholay's phenomenal success can be attributed to perhaps the way it was able to blend the various items or 'masalas' required in a Hindi film in exactly the right doses.
