Sholem Asch (1880 - 1957), also known as Shalom Asch, was a Polish-born American novelist, dramatist, and essayist in the Yiddish language.
Asch was born in Kutno, Poland, of Jewish heritage.
He was one of ten children of a cattle-dealer and innkeeper, and received a traditional Jewish education; as a young man he followed that with a more liberal education obtained at Wloclawek, where he supported himself as a letter writer for the illiterate Jewish townspeople.

Asch, it should be noted, was a highly emotional man and even in his most successful years was often embroiled in controversy, attacked in many quarters, and furious in his response.
Asch, During the past half year I have written you twice with regard to an anthology of Yiddish literature in English translation that is being edited by myseif and Eliezer Greenberg, the YIddish poet.
Asch is very much upset, not so much because you overdid what you were supposed to do, but because, after getting permission to use the material, the editors' comments were none too flattering to say the least.

Asch is a jewish writer but does not contradict Christian beliefs; he rather offers the reader varying accounts of characters in the book, as history itself has done.
It is as if Sholem Asch were one of these characters, masterfully detailing life in Israel while under the rule of Rome, weaving the stories of individuals with the biblical accounts of Jesus and His disciples.

Asch himself would disclaim that he is a theologian and would assert that he wrote these two books "for pleasure." Yet they are decidedly theological, for both The Nazarene and The Apostle are being used today as textbooks in Christian religious seminaries.
Asch himself, although he is a poor public speaker, is being deluged with invitations to lecture to the faculties and student bodies of Christian schools and colleges.

Bogosian’s play, which is in its world premiere, is either a provocative, politically audacious discourse on gender, sex, and power or a middle-aged writer’s preening, masochistic fantasy — maybe a bit of both, in which the author gets to play his own doppelgänger.
Although playwright and novelist Asch was born in Poland, God of Vengeance, his best-known drama, debuted in Berlin in 1907, under the direction of Max Reinhardt, with Rudolf Schildkraut in the role undertaken at Williamstown by Tony winner (for Angels in America) Ron Leibman.

Sholom Asch's tale of lesbian love, God of Vengeance, which had long been a staple of Yiddish theater in its original version, Gott fun Nekoma, was another victim of the campaign of censorship.
This climate kept gay and lesbian characters largely absent from the stage since theater managers were reluctant to risk financial losses--much less prosecution and possible imprisonment.

In the Winter of 1906, Sholom Asch and a group of young writers gathered in the home of Y.L. Peretz, one of the founders of modern Yiddish literature, to read Asch's first play, God Of Vengeance.

Still intensely provocative in 2001, this new translation by Caraid O’Brien tells the story of a wealthy brothel owner who is seeking redemption from God and the community.
