The shomyo tradition, in which the restoration of "Gokuraku Shoka" has played no small part, has continued for over 1,000 years regardless of historic and social changes, and exists even in our day as a unique form of religious rite as well as performing art.
In a field that is almost exclusively composed of male monks, she specializes in shomyo as a music and pursues her performance activities as an individual.
Both Indian music and shomyo have no concept of harmony as a layering of individual sounds, and both have structural similarities, in that melodies are created around a central standard tone.

The word, shomyo, refers to the calling of God's name by the Brahman monks of India, the expression of prayer to God, and the versification and voicing of God's teachings (sutra); in other words, the act of chanting.
From India, shomyo was transmitted to China, and along with Buddhism, from China to Japan, where it was adopted as part of esoteric Buddhism.
In the Tendai sect of Buddhism, during the late Heian Period, Ryonin (1072- 1132) standardized and compiled the shomyo texts that had been introduced from China sometime in the middle of the 9th century, and built the original shomyo seminary at Raigoin, a temple in the Ohara region of Kyoto.

While the music of sutra chanting and shomyo are at once a means of encouraging faith, propagating religious beliefs, and conducting ceremonies, among the monks who practice them, there are undoubtedly a great number who are attracted to the beauty of the music itself.
For the beautiful music that is shomyo to have a wider appeal and provide the ears and hearts of its listeners with delight and solace, there is, after all, a need for innovation and imagination on the part of the monks, though shomyo's religious ties don't make this a simple undertaking.
