Every Saturday, I teach classes in Tsuruoka and Sakata, the main two cities in the Shonai area, in the northwest corner of Yamagata prefecture.
Plenty of snow was falling in Yamagata City when I woke up, and it was snowy all the way to Tsuruoka.
It continued like that all day, and when we (Yuko and I) went to drive back to Yamagata City, the visibility on the road was so poor that we had to turn back.

Sakata City lies in Yamagata's coastal Shonai region, at the mouth of the Mogami river and is Yamagata's main port.
Originally built in 1768 at the request of the Sakai Clan in order to house visiting Shogunate officials, this is Yamagata's only pure buke (samurai residence) style structure.
Just west (a minute walk or so) over the crest from Kaiko-ji (below) is Sakata's, and arguably Shonai's most beautiful park, according to those who live in Sakata (cf Tsuruoka park, Tsuruoka).
