Shonen Knife celebrates its groundbreaking beginnings this year by rereleasing its first four albums, beginning with 1983's ''Burning Farm." The albums, which have been long out of print, have been remastered and given bonus songs.

Kurt Cobain loved Shonen Knife for their "honesty," and it's safe to guess that the 20-plus bands who contributed to the '89 tribute disc Every Band Has a Shonen Knife Who Loves Them (Gasatanka/Giant) did too.
In a way, "Fruits and Vegetables" is Shonen Knife pared down to their essence: the spiritual sustenance, the joy, that comes from mundane pleasures (and, hey, studies do show that food affects mood).
Brand New Knife is the band's first disc of new material in three years, not counting last year's compilation of rarities, Birds and the B-Sides (on Virgin).

Shonen Knife brings power-chord mayhem, Asian-girl angst and songs that sound -- save for the adorable accents and often hyper-cutesy subject matter -- exactly like the Ramones.

Although their records were only available in the U.S. via import, Shonen Knife struck a chord with the underground with a track of theirs appearing on the Sub Pop 100 compilation in 1986.
With Shonen Knife now the hip band to name drop, the group signed their first major U.S. recording contract with Capitol, resulting in the release of one of their finest (and best-known) albums, 1992's Let's Knife.
Both Shonen Knife and DMBQ performed at a tribute concert for Nishiura that was held in Kyoto in spring 2006, shortly before the U.S. release of Genki Shock.

Shonen Knife has remained a favorite group of mine through the years.
Shonen Knife started recording in the early 1980s, something I apparently wasn't aware of when I wrote the 1997 posting.
The first Shonen Knife song I heard was on a computer CD-ROM from Tower Records back in 1996, the song "Gomi Day," and until I got this CD, it was the only Shonen Knife song I had heard, so this was my full introduction to Shonen Knife.

Mana 'China' Nishiura was touring as a member of her current rock band "DMBQ." The band was traveling in a van crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge in New Jersey.
Nishiura was ejected from the van and died, according to the information on Shonen Knife's website.
Nishiura performed live with Shonen Knife from 2001 to 2004 and recorded drums for tracks on the band's albums, "Strawberry Sound," "Heavy Songs," "Orange-no Taiyo." Shonen Knife was a US college radio favorite throughout the 1990s and still records and tours extensively.
