The town centre, which is actually the parish of New Shoreham, is dominated by the River Adur which is a wide expanse of vegetated mud-flats at low water, with the river flow cutting a narrow path, and a tidal inlet at high tide.
Shoreham is the premier Sussex port serving a hinterland of over 400 thousand people including the city of Brighton and Hove and the larger town of Worthing.
Shoreham Harbour which was based in the town centre up to the beginning of the 20th century is now mostly to the east of the town boundary.

Airport manager John Haffenden told The Argus that the site, previously jointly owned by Brighton and Hove City Council and Worthing Borough Council, had to move with the times to survive and compete with other airports.
Representatives from Erinaceous, which took the airport into private ownership for the first time in its history when it bought it in an £8.6 million deal, will be there to talk about the plans.
The airport spokesman said: "There will not be a formal presentation but it will be an opportunity for those living and working in the area or with an interest in the airport to discuss the proposals and to provide feedback.

Work began on the fort early in the year of 1857 and in June 1857 the fort was completed and details of cost, armament and accommodation are given in a record drawing of Shoreham Redoubt, drawn from some old plans and measurements by W. Mumford, of The Royal Engineers, on the 1st September, 1886.
The site that Shoreham fort sits is a shingle spit, 1.6 hect (4 acres) on the west bank, where the river Adur exits to the sea.
The spit being separated from the mainland for nearly 2 miles (3.2km) by the coarse of the river Adur, until the river then makes it coarse inland, just near Shoreham airport.
