Short Brothers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shorts was the first true aviation company in the world, and was a manufacturer of flying boats during the 1920's and 30's and throughout the 2nd World War.
Their work on seaplanes eventually culminated in the Short Sandringham and Seaforth types, both based on the Empire/Sunderland boats these flying boats had enough range to operate as a transatlantic airliner but largely served the post war empire (Commonwealth) market in competition with 4 engined land planes such as the modified Lancasters.
In the 1970s Shorts entered the feederliner market with their 330, a stretched modification of the Skyvan, called the C-23 Sherpa in USAF service, and another stretch resulted in the more streamlined Shorts 360, in which a more conventional central fin superseded the older H-profiled twin fins.

Short S.29 Stirling   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Short initially proposed a design that would give good high-altitude performance provided by a wing spanning 112 ft 0 in (34.14 m) and was to be powered by four Rolls Royce Goshawk engines.
The Short design team had therefore to revise its concept with a wing of reduced span and greater chord, the resulting decrease in aspect ratio inevitably reducing high-altitude capability.
Short had originally decided on an incidence of 3° giving the best possible cruise performance, but the RAF asked that the incidence be increased to 6.5°, being more concerned with improving take-off performance than the cruising speed.

In response, British Imperial Airways announced a competition for 28 flying boats, each weighing 16.4 tonnes (18 tons) and having a range of 1,130 kilometers (700 miles) with a capacity of 24 passengers.
The business opportunity was too great to pass up despite the risk, and so Oswald Short, head of the company, began a crash program to come up with a design for a flying boat far beyond anything they had ever built.
Of course, then I became aware that aircraft nicknames are often fabrications created by propagandists or overly-imaginative writers, and wondered whether the Germans actually did call the Sunderland the Flying Porcupine, After all this time that may be difficult to prove one way or another, and not particularly worth the effort.
