British Empire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The empire thus took shape during the early 17th century, with the English settlement of the eastern colonies of North America, which would later become the original United States as well as Canada's Atlantic provinces, and the colonisation of the smaller islands of the Caribbean such as Jamaica and Barbados.
The period is distinguished by an unprecedented pursuit of what has been termed "empire for empire's sake", aggressive competition for overseas territorial acquisitions and the emergence in colonising countries of doctrines of racial superiority which denied the fitness of subjugated peoples for self-government.
Formal empire in India, beginning with the Government of India Act of 1858, was a means of consolidation, reacting to the abortive Indian Mutiny, which was in itself a conservative reaction among Indian traditionalists to British policy in the subcontinent.

 The Short Sunderland Flying Boat
The design he produced, the Short "S.23", was a clean and elegant aircraft, with a wingspan of 35 meters (114 feet), a length of 27 meters (88 feet), an empty weight of 10.9 tonnes (24,000 pounds), and a loaded weight of 18.4 tonnes (40,500 pounds).
The Empire boats would be little more than a footnote in aviation history except for the fact that this family of aircraft included a military type, the "S.25" or "Sunderland", which would become one of the most famous flying boats ever built.
Short Brothers, in collaboration with Saunders-Roe, submitted a design that was accepted, with a contract awarded for two prototypes of the "Shetland", as it was named.

The Chronicle: 3/28/2003: America: an Empire in Denial
Once there was an empire that governed roughly a quarter of the world's population, covered about the same proportion of the Earth's land surface, and dominated nearly all its oceans.
Empire -- and specifically the British empire -- is the instance that springs to mind.
The empire also did a good deal to encourage those things in countries which were outside its formal imperial domain but under its economic influence through the "imperialism of free trade." Prima facie, therefore, there seems a plausible case that the empire enhanced global welfare -- in other words, was a Good Thing.

This was America's first real taste of Empire and as Warren Zimmerman explains it marked a turning point in the way in which it saw the world.
In 1898, he says, Americans were given a sense of confidence which they never really lost, a sense of vocation about being a power that stood for something in the world.
We also tried to take soundings of American public opinion, which revealed little appetite for long-term foreign entanglements along with a sense of unease that America's role in the world was, as many people put it, so misunderstood by their friends and allies abroad.
