Short Seamew - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Short Seamew was selected to fulfil Admiralty Specification M.123, for a simple, lightweight anti-submarine aircraft capable of unassisted operation from any of the Royal Navy's aircraft carriers in all but the worst of conditions.
Arthur Pearcy wrote "only Short Brothers' test pilot Wally Runciman seemed able to outwit its vicious tendencies and exploit its latent manoeuvrability to the limit." Rumours that the crash had been cause by a material failure were current at the time but the accident investigation did not confirm them.

A remarkable feature of all Seamews was that they were supplied to the US Navy with a fixed wheel undercarriage.
For a short run kit, the fit is excellent; the sprue gates are reasonably thick, there is no flash and the parts are sharply moulded with delicate panel lines.

Short Brothers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shorts was the first true aviation company in the world, and was a manufacturer of flying boats during the 1920's and 30's and throughout the Second World War.
The Short Sunderland, widely operated by the Allied powers during World War II Shorts then started design work on one of their most famous designs, the Short Calcutta, based on the Singapore layout but larger and more powerful.
In the 1970s Shorts entered the feederliner market with their Shorts 330, a stretched modification of the Skyvan, called the C-23 Sherpa in USAF service, and another stretch resulted in the more streamlined Shorts 360, in which a more conventional central fin superseded the older H-profiled twin fins.

The Seamew was designed to fill a need for a cheap, lightweight, and simple anti submarine patrol aircraft for NATO, with the idea being that large numbers would be needed, in the event of war, to protect ships and harbours.
In the Seamews case the combination of large wing area and low weight prevented this from happening and it was subjected to considerable buffeting on the landing approach due to disturbed airflow around the carriers island and deck.
Seamew was to keep Russkie subs down, hoping they would not discover the modest payload of a wooden machine.

The Seamews were a bit better off than the USN versions, as they had the heavy floats removed and were fitted with fixed landing gear.
Only a couple of squadrons used the Seamew in any kind of quantity, and it was quickly phased out of active service when other Lend/Lease types came on board, most notably the Vought Kingfisher.
The decal options are for one USN SO3C flown off of the cruiser USS Denver in January 1943 and one FAA Seamew from 755 Squadron in April 1944.

The Seamew was as odd-looking or more so than the Gannet, with a deep, relatively narrow fuselage, a two-placed cockpit perched very high to give the crew a good view, a radome directly under the cockpit, and fixed taildragger landing gear.
The Seamew's handling was said to have left something to be desired, and despite work to improve matters the aircraft never proved very satisfactory.

The Bréguet Alizés of the Indian Navy
Choosing the Alizé as an ASM platform aircraft was a well thought out decision by the Indians.
They were on the one hand heavily influenced by the British, who were pushing the Fairey Gannet and Short Seamew, while France was offering its Bréguet 1050 Alizé.
The latter was judged superior to its two British rivals and a deal which would see the procurement of twelve of these planes was signed in 1960.
