Topic: Short Stirling

  ShortStirling
In October 1942 75 Sqn began to equip with the mark I Short Stirling heavy bomber and in February 1943 converted to the mark III.
The Stirling had a all-metal stressed skin, Unlike the fabric covered Wellington, The Stirling, unlike the Lancaster or the Halifax was specifically designed as a four engined bomber rather than as a progression from a two engined design.
The Stirling required great care when taking off as it was inclined to swing because of engine torque and the height of the undercarriage; (The Stirling was once described as the most elaborate piece of machinery ever devised for the purpose of lifting an undercarriage in to the air)

NLS - Short Stirling   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The Short Stirling was the first of the four-engined bombers to fly, the prototype taking to the air in May of 1939.
The engineers at Short's were faced with the restriction that the wingspan had to be less than one hundred feet so that it could fit into the standard RAF hangars of the day.
At low altitudes however, the Stirling was the fastest of the heavy bombers.

Quasiturbine Stirling Engine (Sterling) - Rotary Hot Air Motor - Heat Pump
The Stirling engine is able to produce mechanical energy from a constant heat flow, which the open Otto Cycle engine cannot do; furthermore, the Stirling has no intake and no exhaust.
It is the purpose of the Stirling to work by bringing the most possible heat by gas absorption from the hot area to the cold area.
Whereas the researchers unanimously seem to carry their attention on the use of regenerators, we believe that the improvement of Stirling passes rather by an increase in the speed of the gas movement between the cycles of relaxation and contraction, and the suppression of regenerator (and yes!).

There were only two Stirlings marked like this : LK 589 marked as V3 and LK 508 marked at various times as either U3 or W3 (!) LK 589 was built as a Mk III, but later converted to a Mk IV.
Stirlings equipped with H2S radomes were also operated by No 1657 Heavy Conversion Unit at RAF Stradishall.

WW2 Warbirds: the Short Stirling - Frans Bonné
Short initially proposed a design with good high-altitude performance provided by a wing spanning 112 ft 0 in (34,14 m) and based in structural and aerodynamic terms on that of its Sunderland maritime reconnaissance flying boat, but it was at this stage that the Air Ministry demanded the ability to fit into the standard hangar.
Short Stirling Mk II This version was planned to be built in Canada, in the event Great Britain would be invaded or bombed out by the Germans.
Short Stirling A.Mk IV In 1943 the role of the Stirling was changed from heavy bomber to other duties, since the Halifax and Lancaster were phased in in that slot.

 Quasiturbine> Type> Stirling Engine
In the Quasiturbine Stirling, all the engine shell is pressurized with helium, so that the inter-chambers leaks are automatically recycled by the central region, and required only sealing of a turning shaft (comparatively to the sealing of the back and forth piston connecting rods, unless sealed machines, which the Quasiturbine also can be).
The Stirling Piston engines are known to be large and heavy, which the Quasiturbine-Stirling concept should solve, because there is no pipe or external accessory or heat exchanger required.
Stirling is a gas-gas (no phase change) machine by opposition to Ranking cycle, which is a phase change machine with liquid and gas.

Quasiturbine Stirling Engine (Sterling) - Rotary Hot Air Motor - Heat Pump
It is the purpose of the Stirling to work by bringing the most possible heat by gas absorption from the hot area to the cold area.
In all Stirling concepts, there is an obvious considerable loss of time when moving the gas which is often spread out over more than 90 degrees of shaft rotation, shortening the push and creating a backpressure.
Whereas the researchers unanimously seem to carry their attention on the use of regenerators, we believe that the improvement of Stirling passes rather by an increase in the speed of the gas movement between the cycles of relaxation and contraction, and the suppression of regenerator (and yes!).

 Stirling
Shorts Stirling hold many records- the first 4-engined monoplane bomber of W.W.II, the the first designed from the outset with 4 engines and the first to be withdrawn from service.
The solution to the various conflicting requirements of the specification was sought by Shorts - an experienced flying boat designer- who used the basic wing design of the Sunderland Flying boat, (which itself was an extremely hardy and capable submarine hunter- with long the long range essential for the role.
Night bombing had to be learned somewhere, dealing with navigation, radar and worst of all in those harsh winters of the early '40s- ice.

Battlefront.com Discussion Forums: Short Stirling Bomber
I do remember that the crews said that they didn't like the Stirling because they were under the rest of the bomber stream and feared that 'friendly' bombs would hit them on the way down, plus they were the first target that any climbing defending fighters ran into.
To be fair, I gather that later marks of the Stirling did excellent work as transports and glider tugs.
AIUI another propblem with the Stirling was the compartmentalized bomb-bay, which limited it to the puny sizes of bomb the RAF mistakenly thought it could win the war with in 1939.

 RCAF.com : The Aircraft : Short STIRLING
Designed at the outset with four engines, the Shorts Stirling was the RAF's first four-engine heavy bomber to reach service.
An unusual constraint to the Shorts design was the limitation of the wing span to less than 100 feet in order to fit the standard RAF hangars of that era.
While the Short Stirling was maneuverable and stable, the small wing area imposed relatively poor operational altitude capabilities when fully loaded.

Yet to Van Arsdell and a few others, the Stirling engine represents an alternative workhorse for the future – even though it was invented 188 years ago by a Scottish minister named Robert Stirling.
There are a variety of reasons, which mostly stem from the high cost of manufacturing (especially compared with internal combustion engines) and the lack of an extensive support system for spare parts, maintenance and repairs.

The Short Stirling could manage a maximum speed of 270 mph, a range of 2,300 miles, and a load of 14,000 lbs.
Flying in formation not only prevented accidents and funnelled as many planes over the target as possible in a short amount of time, it also helped the bombers defend one another from enemy fighters by providing interlocking fields of fire.
