Short map - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In mathematics, a short map, or nonexpansive map, is a special kind of continuous function between metric spaces.
Thus metric spaces and short maps form a category Met; Met is a subcategory of the category of metric spaces and Lipschitz maps, and the isomorphisms in Met are the isometries.
Note that an isometry is never strictly short (except in the degenerate case of the empty space).

 National Map
Map 1 also identifies a number of distinct and important dialect areas in the Eastern United States, which were clearly set out in the work of the Linguistic Atlas (Kurath and McDavid 1961): Eastern New England; New York City; and the Mid-Atlantic coastal area encompassing Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore.
A remarkable finding of Map 1 is that the major phonological boundaries of the U.S. as determined by new and vigorous sound changes which arose in the 20th century coincide with the major lexical boundaries based on vocabulary wjocj was largely set in the early settlement periods.
Map 1 therefore identifies all of the NCS speakers as those for whom the difference in the F2 of /e/ and /o/ is less than 375 Hz.

 Election result maps
The answer seems to be that the amount of red on the map is skewed because there are a lot of counties in which only a slim majority voted Republican.
Robert Vanderbei at Princeton University, is to use not just two colors on the map, red and blue, but instead to use red, blue, and shades of purple to indicate percentages of voters.
In this map, it appears that only a rather small area is taken up by true red counties, the rest being mostly shades of purple with patches of blue in the urban areas.

The value of teaching map and compass in a classroom or an outdoor situation is often overlooked.
Map and compass is one of those areas of outdoor education that we tend to overlook.
In twenty years of teaching map and compass, I have found that of all map concepts, declination, the difference between magnetic north and true north, is the most difficult to teach.

This is a simple, short base map, which features some decent ideas, but also unfortunately demonstrates some basic flaws in quake 1 map design.
The map comes in a pak which features some custom sounds, including some for the weapons which don't really improve on the original sounds, which in the case of Quake 1 is notoriously hard to do, because the originals were so good.
The start is possibly actually the hardest part of the map, due to the fact that you only have a single shotgun and not much ammo.

 Metric space
An important consequence is that every metric space admits partitions of unity and that every continuous real-valued function defined on a closed subset of a metric space can be extended to a continuous map on the whole space (Tietze extension theorem).
It is also true that every real-valued Lipschitz-continuous map defined on a subset of a metric space can be extended to a Lipschitz-continuous map on the whole space.
A simple way to construct a function separating a point from a closed set (as required for a completely regular space) is to consider the distance between the point and the set.

Use of short-term culture for identification of MAP in tissue..   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
RESULTS: MAP was present in six of seven (86%) surgically resected tissue samples and in four of 20 (20%) biopsies, with an overall 37% from CD patients, as compared to two of 36 (5.6%) of control specimens.
The presence of MAP in Mycobacterial Growth Indicator Tube (MGIT) cultures was detected within 10-12 weeks for surgically resected tissue and after 40 weeks for biopsy specimens, with no MAP growth detected in 12B* Bactec cultures.
CONCLUSIONS: Because MAP was present in 86% of resected tissue compared to 20% of biopsy specimens from CD patients, we speculate that MAP resides in the submucosal layer closer to the active part of the ulcer rather than on the surface of the mucosal cells.
