At the beginning of the novel Mirek is looking for the letters he wrote to one of his lovers when he was a young man, so that he could destroy them and change the past.
The author has produced a most accomplished version of his own, specific genre of the novel based on models from Classicism: a "novel as a debate" whose characters are personifications of ideas and whose narrator freely interrupts the story and reflects on it for the benefit of the reader.
An accomplished short novel, a mature example of Kundera's art, it is a playful postscript to the whole prosaic work by Milan Kundera and an amusing counterbalance to the seriousness of Nesmrtelnost.

 North Carolina Collection-Thomas Wolfe Biography
Thomas Clayton Wolfe (3 Oct. 1900-15 Sept. 1938), novelist and short story writer, was born in Asheville, the eighth child of William Oliver, a stonecutter from Pennsylvania, and Julia Elizabeth Westall Wolfe, a native North Carolinian.
His short novel, A Portraintof Bascom Hawke, appeared in Scribner's Magazine, and it was co-winner of the $5,000 Scribner's Short Novel Prize.
Thus only in his short stories, short novels, and Look Homeward, Angel does Wolfe's work survive in a a form in which he himself was the principal agent of organization.

Short stories are fun but they can sometimes be difficult to sell and the payoff isn't usually as good as a full size novel.
This first novel has been a major task for me because of my ADHD and learning disabilitys in writing.(not to mention dislexea) However, I had a few friends do a test read of the book and they all loved it(even thought it was not translated out of dislexic yet).
I am currentlywriting a novel that a friend loves, but I am afraid it's the maincharacter's personality and humor that she likes more than the plot.
