Hill Guitar Co. - Short Scale
The difference is slight, maybe imperceptible, but this difference can tip the scales of comfort for many people.
Don't be afraid of a shorter scale, and don't prejudge it as wimpy, or an inadequate compromise.
The fact is that this scale may be a more appropriate for many players, because of stature, style, age, or just because of the sensual pleasure of playing a more lithe and free instrument.

Acoustic Guitar Central: Questions and Answers about Guitars, Technique, Music, and Players
With electric guitars, people often refer to the "Fender scale" vs. the "Gibson scale" (most Gibson electrics feature a short, 24 3/4-inch scale, while Fenders generally have the longer 25.5-inch scale), but acoustic scale length doesn't tend to be as fl and white.
For instance, Gibson's J-200 has a 25.5-inch scale (with some very early models even sporting a length of 26 inches), and Martin traditionally uses a short scale on instruments smaller than a 000.
Scale length influences both the sound and the feel of a guitar.

Short scale guitar's strings press easier, bend easier, take finger vibrato easier and sound a touch softer and sweeter than their normal scale counterparts.
The longer scale, being under more tension, yields a sound that tends to be punchier, that is, more direct and tight sounding with less in the way of overtones.
Short scale is easier for bending, and I feel you could put larger gauged strings on.

Names of large numbers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
When a number represents a measurement rather than a count, SI prefixes can be used; one says "femtosecond", not "one quadrillionth of a second.", although often powers of ten are used instead of some of the very high and very low prefixes.
An easy way to find out scientific notation for one of the above numbers in the short scale is to take the Latin cardinal number indicated in the name (Such as 2 in 'bi'llion, 4 in 'quadri'llion, 18 in 'octodec'illion etc), then add one to it, and finally multiply the whole thing by 3.
Traditional French usage has varied; in 1948, France, which had been using the short scale, reverted to the long scale.

Guitar Scale Lengths   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
"The scale length of an instrument is the distance from the nut to the 12th fret multiplied by 2."
The reason for this is that the tighter a string is stretched, the longer it will sustain, and for a string of any given thickness, the string at the longer scale will have to be tensioned higher than the string at the shorter scale to reach the same pitch.
Most guitar scale lengths are between 24 and 26 inches, with the most common being 24-3/4" (Les Paul style) and 25-1/2" (Fender style)." -The Guitar Builder's FAQ (electric guitars section) (c) 1995 Bill Wyza.
