Short subject - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Short subject is an American film industry term that historically has referred to any film in the format of two reels, or approximately 20 minutes running time, or less.
Short subjects could be live action or animated; comedy was particularly utilized as their style, and well-known comedians such as Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel and Hardy and others are best known from short subject films.
These shorts and others were produced in-house by, or financed by, motion picture companies that either owned their own theater chains (for example, Loews Theatres), or forced theaters to take their shorts by selling them in the same unalterable package as their big-name features.

Later, during the heyday of the studios when they owned their own circuits, all accompanying newsreels, cartoons, comedy shorts, sports commentaries, travelogues, were "one-reelers" although not always ten minutes in length (cartoons were usually between five and eight).
In many instances a short film is at best a calling card, a credit, to prove to a prospective employer that its maker does indeed know something about producing a film.
Filmmakers in short subjects tend to forget this with the result that many of the 40-odd titles shown each day quickly fade away.

By 1933 Short was an advance agent for Interstate, and the following year Hoblitzelle and O'Donnell asked her to direct the chain's new short subjects department.
Interstate's executives' interest in short subject films, which usually ran twelve to fifteen minutes, derived from their desire to avoid adopting the increasingly common practice of offering two feature films at one showing to entice audiences into theaters during the Great Depression.

The distribution of short subjects is a notoriously difficult challenge, but a package like this, timed for release at Oscar time, is the perfect solution.
The subject is Ryan Larkin, who circa 1970 made animated films considered among the best and most influential in Canadian history, and then went astray into drug addiction and alcoholism.
Not included in the program, presumably because their makers chose not to participate, are the animated shorts "Guard Dog" by Bill Plympton, and "Lorenzo" by Mike Gabriel and Baker Bloodworth of Disney, and the live-action short "Everything in This Country Must" by Gary McKendry.

Short films and the Internet have historically been seen as natural partners.
It should have been no surprise, then, that the startups that attempted to aggregate audiences around short films were among the most ballyhooed and best financed of their day: AtomFilms, the Digital Entertainment Network, iFilm, Pixelon, Pop.com, and Pseudo.
The ones that tried to produce their own content were the most spectacular disasters—DEN and Pixelon both ended in arrest warrants for the founders—while aggregators like Atom (now half of AtomShockwave) lived to stream another day.

Many shorter men claim that tall men are more often excused for coarse behavior, admired for their disregard of small matters and "small" individuals, and easily forgiven for things like accidentally knocking you down or hugging you too vigorously.
A short man, by contrast, is often in the position of proving everybody wrong — proving that a short man can achieve, a short man can take command, a short man can reach up and change that light bulb.
Both men and women respondents (short and tall) rated the short men (between five-foot-two and five-foot-five) less mature, less positive, less secure, less masculine, less successful, and less capable.

In the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, women were forced to assume a greater role in a society from which they'd largely been excluded — but many of those women had been through unspeakable suffering, from the murder of their families to repeated rapes that left countless numbers of them HIV-positive.

Short selling involves borrowing a security from its owner with the promise of replacing it after a proscribed period of time.
IPO expert Tom Taulli said the issue of naked short selling may be what investigators are interested in, since by definition, it's more difficult to have shares to borrow to short in an IPO situation, since the stock is not immediately available on the open market.
Even if naked shorting was to have occurred and even if it took place outside standard rules, that still leaves open the question of whether it caused the plunge.
