The wakizashi is a shorter length sword that was developed to meet the needs of an "inside sword" where space did not permit proper use of a long sword.
It was not only the companion sword of the matched daisho set, but was also the sword of merchants and artisans who were forbidden by edict from wearing a katana.
Some were made as the short sword, shoto, of the daisho set, while others were made a single swords to be sold to foot soldiers (ashigaru), merchants, tradesman and artisans.

Considering the French involvement with Dahomey its not unreasonable to suggest that this sword could be a native copy of a 'cabbage cutter', the nickname for the short French issue side arm.
Sword finally arrived today, very heavy and solid......no way a tourist piece...blade is still quite sharp...even though heavily rusted.....and has a nice 'ring' to it when struck.
The hilt is very heavy, when handling the sword I noticed that by grasping the hilt near the top (leaves about 4cms of pommel protruding) gives the swinging action more power.....with the added advantage that the pommel could be used to strike an opponent in 'close quarter' combat.

Its not a military sword its a Ko wakizashi.
This is an indication of the age of the blade.
I do know that the sword came back from Japan in 1946 and really has not been handled much since, so I would suspect it will be tough to pop it out as you note.
