Short-recoil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The short-recoil system of operation is that which uses the recoil of the firearm to function (that is, to lock/unlock the firearm's breech, to extract and eject the cartridge case from the firearm, to feed a new cartridge into the chamber, and to ready the firing mechanism).
In the short-recoil system, the breech-block remains locked to the barrel for a distance less than that of the length of the cartridge being fired.

Recoil operated - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is also known as a "short recoil" system.
In a recoil operated handgun, the barrel and slide are locked together during firing.
After firing, the slide and barrel move together for a short distance until the barrel is disengaged either by a camming link, a falling block or a rotating block system.

Wadcutter: Autoloader operation systems: Part V
Another difference is that in long recoil guns the barrel and breechblock (or bolt) are locked together for the full length of a cartridge, as opposed to the quarter-inch or so that is typical for short recoil (hence the two systems respective names).
The system of long recoil is similar to short recoil in that both incorporate a locked breech and a recoiling barrel that is not directly fixed to the frame.
However, with long recoil both the breechblock and the barrel have independent recoil springs, as opposed to the single spring used in short recoil.

ArmaLite, Inc. Technical Note - Identification and Correction of Malfunctions
Short recoil is usually due to an accumulation of fouling in the mechanism.(short stroke may also be caused by a fouled or obstructed gas tube).
Short recoil cycles or fouled or corroded rifle chambers are the most common causes of failures to extract.
In short recoil, the bolt lacks sufficient energy to move fully rearward to engage the cartridge base, or, with the base engaged, lacks sufficient energy to complete the feeding operation.

THE SHORT SPIN: “Recoil” by Nonpoint
Recoil” is by far the most mature of their three albums (Development, 2002; Statement; 2000; Struggle; 1997), yet still contains strong remnants of the explosiveness that made them an underground cult phenomena in their early days in Florida.
Nonpoint’s latest effort, “Recoil,” is an impressive integration of raw, aggressive energy and soothing melodies.
Formed in 1997 in Southern Florida, Nonpoint (Elias Soriano, Robb Rivera, Andrew Goldman, KB Daniels) has a constantly evolving sound, avoiding the nu-metal cliche yet remaining just narrowly outside the mainstream.

 SHOTGUN TYPES
Long recoil operated, short recoil operated, and gas operated autoloading actions were all devised by John Browning, and the firm that bears his name has made all three types.
The short recoil shotgun also uses recoil energy for power, but the barrel and bolt are only locked together for a short distance, usually less than 1/2 inch.
Most autoloading pistols also operate on the short recoil principle, and this is where the system has found its most common application.

 The Short Mag Revolution
The Winchester Short Magnum family uses a case that is nominally.550-inch in diameter, rim rebated to.532-inch (the same as most belted magnums), with a case length of 2.1 inches.
The short magnums do not achieve "belted magnum performance" by simply using a case that is wide instead of long and burning the same powder charge.
Less powder weight equals less recoil velocity, and recoil velocity is a key factor (together with gun weight) in deriving foot-pounds of recoil energy.

 MG42
When shot is fired, after the short recoil of the barrel with the bolt locked to it, rollers are pushed inward by the shaped cams in the receiver, releasing the bolt head from the barrel.
MG-42 uses a short recoiling barrel with muzzle recoil booster, somewhat similar in appearance to one found on MG-34.

 Types of Operation
In general, the barrel is permitted to recoil so as to deliver impetus to the mechanism; the recoil may be long or short, the latter being more common.
As the slide recoils, the rearward motion of the piston is resisted by the gas pressure bled into the tube.
The long recoil stroke works as a method of compensating for heavy recoil and is usually used in conjunction with some kind of hydraulic buffer system.

Wadcutter: Autoloader operation systems: Part II
The most popular non-Browning short recoil systems include those seen on the Berretta 92 (an oscillating wedge locks and unlocks the slide and barrel), and on the Berretta 9000 (lugs on the slide fit into diagonal grooves on the barrel, causing the barrel to rotate as it recoils until it is free of the lugs).
The purpose for having the barrel recoil a short distance is two-fold: (1) It allows for a lighter breechblock and/or a less-stiff spring to be used.
This is often referred to as “Browning-type” or “tilting barrel” short recoil.

 TM 9-1275, MALFUNCTIONS & CORRECTIONS
Short recoil stoppages, often confused with feed stoppages, occur in rifles which are underpowered; and therefore do not drive the operating rod completely to the rear.
When a weapon is underpowered, and thus subject to short recoil stoppages, it will usually close on an empty chamber or fail to eject the fired case, closing with the spent case in the chamber.
Feed failures, as in the case of short recoil stoppages, may cause the weapon to close on an empty chamber.

 ASSAULT RIFLES AND THEIR AMMUNITION:
This was a selective fire weapon using a short-recoil action and was chambered for a military rifle cartridge of intermediate calibre and power - the 6.5x50SR Arisaka - large quantities of Japanese rifles in this calibre having been acquired by Russia.
The problem with short barrels in this calibre is that they reduce the muzzle velocity, and the 5.56mm bullets rely on a high impact velocity to tumble and fragment.
Perhaps the most bizarre was the "folded path" ammunition, stemming from a desire to make the cartridge as short as possible to speed up the firing cycle.
