Later in the tour, we were playing the wren-babbler tape when we spotted a small bird amidst several boulders in a stream bed right at the edge of the road, seemingly unconcerned by our presence.
Except for one breeding site high in the Himalayas of north central Nepal requiring a strenuous trek to reach, the Gould's Shortwing is rarely ever found and is one of the most difficult species in Asia to see.
Earlier, we had seen the Rusty-bellied Shortwing, another little-known Himalayan bird that is rarely found outside the breeding season.

Birding around the village of Lava is well-covered in the recently published Birding Guide to India by Kazmierczak and Singh.
However, specifics of finding this shortwing are not included although, as mentioned in the book, the species will probably prove to be not uncommon in the area once its vocalizations are better known.
I observed the shortwing singing in the forest edge by the bridge right by the track.

I will be painting my shortwing sooner or later and am looking for the parking area where the shortwings are going to be concentrated so I can take a few snapshots of everyone's paint schemes.
If anyone knows of the exact location that the SWPC and other Pacers will be located, please describe the location as best you can so I can "run" there, snap a few mugs, and run back as efficiently as I can.

Here we flushed a female Satyr Tragopan and further on the trail we saw a White-browed Shortwing, Black-throated- Parrotbill, Hoary Barwing etc. Later I followed the stream in the valley which starts in front of the Trekker’s Hut.
But it's very sad to see that a few 100 metres further the trees were already cut and this spot will not have a long life.
The Rusty-bellied Shortwing we saw and heard at the spot of Dave S. I also found another bird along the logging track to the right from the road to Neora NP.

We returned the next morning to scan the distant hillside of Rajamalai, closed as the rare Nilgiri Tahr were giving birth, and saw several distant Tahr at around 07.30, but, surprisingly, no Grassbirds were seen.

Best birds include: White-bellied Shortwing, Nilgiri Laughingthrush, Black-and-Orange Flycatcher, Forest Wagtail, and what was in retrospect probably Nilgiri Flycatcher (the white in the tail is not easy to see even in flight).
I explored both paths but to the left saw a White-bellied Shortwing and two Nilgiri Laughingthrushes within about 1Km of the sign (keep heading straight and level, I did explore the side tracks but best birds were on the level track to the radio tower even though there is very little Shola here).
There are about three small Shola patches where I saw the other birds which included 18+ Nigiri Laughingthrushes, several Black-and-Orange Flycatchers, 1 White-bellied Shortwing and one Nilgiri Flycatcher.

The aim of the trip was to try and see a few of the skulkers and specialities of the region such as Fulvous and Brown Parrotbills, Cutia, Rusty-bellied Shortwing and Rufous-throated Wren Babbler plus a few goodies like Cutia and thrushes.
Overall, the people were fantastic; the food was good, beer likewise; getting around was very easy in minibuses etc. Hotels were good value and the trekkers huts on the Sandakphu route were very welcoming.
We had Rusty-bellied Shortwing past the two cattle sheds mentioned in recent gen. We had to go right off trail and sit on the forested hillside for a while before remarkably one started singing right beside us.
