Shot (ice hockey) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A shot in ice hockey is an attempt by a player to score a goal by striking the puck with his stick in the direction of the net.
A count of how many shots are taken by a team is kept and this is often used as rough guide to which team is being more aggressive and dominant.
A scoring attempt in hockey (as opposed to soccer) is officially counted as a shot only when it is directed on goal, resulting in a goal or requiring the goaltender to make a save.

In ice hockey, a penalty shot is a type of penalty awarded when a team loses a clear scoring opportunity because of a foul committed by an opposing player.
Penalty shots are most commonly awarded when a player is fouled from behind on a breakaway and is not able to take a shot.
If a penalty shot is awarded and the penalized team had pulled their goaltender in favour of an extra attacker, an automatic goal is awarded in lieu of the penalty shot.

This is the off-foot snap shot, whereby a player who shoots right will stand on their right leg and perform the shot from there.
The main difference is that you are on one leg for this shot, meaning that you cannot transfer weight from one leg to another, instead you bend your knee to bring the stick back, and straighten it slightly as you explode through the shot action.

It is rumoured to be among Paul Newman's favourites - and it certainly is one of his best comedic roles ever: George Roy Hill's Slap Shot was a sleeper hit in 1977 when it first entered theatres and it was already notorious among movie rating "executives" in the MPAA before it even made the preview.
The "excessive amount of foul and coarse language" almost got the picture an X-rating at the time, and it was Paul Newman, who pointed out that writing the dialogue any cleaner would be a travesty of a true reflection of the sport and the people who play it.
A much simpler plot in many ways compared to the original, Slap Shot 2 tries to re-ignite the flame but in the end is just shallow entertainment.
