  Basketball rules
The shot clock was first introduced by the NBA in 1954, to increase the speed of play.
Teams were then required to attempt a shot within twenty-four seconds of gaining possession, and the shot clock would be reset when the ball touched the basket's rim or the backboard, or the opponents gained possession.
A missed shot where the shot clock expires while the ball is in the air constituted a violation.

STORM: 24: Analyzing the Shorter Shot Clock
The story of the WNBA preseason thus far has been the league's move from a 30-second shot clock to the 24-second incarnation used by FIBA and the NBA.
In the long term, Donovan's concern is that the shorter clock will mean the motion-based offenses favored in the women's game will be traded for the isolation plays that have been a staple in the NBA.
However, the head coach of the U.S. Women's Senior National Team should know that is not the mentality in international play, and eight of the 12 players on the Storm's current roster have some international experience, either for the U.S. or for their native country.

Killing the clock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In basketball, a shot clock is implemented so that a field goal has to be attempted within a time frame (24 seconds in the NBA).
Killing the clock is still possible by using up all the allowed time before attempting any shot, therefore reducing the number of possessions left (and chances for the opponent to score) in the game.
In soccer, a referee can call a violation if the team is obviously killing the clock; in matches where a single game ball is used, a common tactic is to kick the ball into the stands, as the clock does not stop while the ball is being retrieved.

The rules committee, chaired by Seton Hall Athletic Director Larry Keating, is expected to discuss expansion of the 3-point line from its current distance of 19 feet, 9 inches and widening the free-throw lane and/or restoring the five-second count against closely guarded ballhandlers.
The committee sent a survey to coaches, officials and media members a while ago, and the question about the shot clock asked whether the committee should: A) leave it at 35 seconds; B) cut it to 30 seconds; C) cut it to 24 seconds.
So did I. The explanation of why the rules committee switched to the 35-second clock following the 1992-93 season was to help smooth the final two minutes of games, when teams trying to erase large deficits were compelled to foul in order to regain possession of the ball.

When the NCAA rules committee announced in 1993 it was trimming the college-basketball shot clock from 45 seconds to 35, Kevin O'Neill reacted as if it had taken away his precious cell phone.
Then coach at Marquette, O'Neill had built himself a thundering team he figured to be ideally suited for the game at a 45-rpm pace, but not athletic or prolific enough to survive the run-and-gun atmosphere that seemed certain to result from the quicker shot clock.
To reverse the trend, the rules committee should consider returning the shot clock to 45 seconds and moving back the 3-point line.
