  The Shotgun
Shotguns are pretty limited on the number of shots they hold even though each shot does put out a lot of lead at one time.
The most accurate way to fire a dual grip shotgun like this is to hold and aim it like a bow, pulling apart by the grips and sighting down the barrel as you would pull the string away from the bow and sight down the arrow.
Slugs are favored hunting loads in areas where longer range rifles may prove dangerous to unintended targets.

 Shotgun Slugs
Rifled slugs are probably the most dangerous type of ammunition to use in a wooded area crowded with hunters and other humans, as they plow through visually impenetrable brush, leaves, and small tree limbs with aplomb.
Brenneke rifled slugs still use felt and fiber wads, and are suitable for use in smooth or rifled shotgun barrels.
Shotgun slug loads intended to be fired from smooth bore barrels manage to combine the worst properties of any hunting projectile: marginal accuracy, low velocity, low sectional density, low ballistic coefficient, rainbow trajectory, and heavy recoil.

 Shotguns in hunting situations
Shotguns are smoothbore firearms (they do not have a rifling inside the barrel) that are used for short to medium range shooting.
Shotguns are designed to withstand much smaller pressures developed in the chamber when firing than do rifles, therefore shotgun barrels are thinner-walled than rifle barrels.
Shotgun barrel is not uniform in diameter from chamber to muzzle.

Shotgun slug - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Many shotgun slugs are designed to be stable when fired from a smoothbore barrel, which lacks the rifling normally used to stabilize the projectile.
A shotgun firing a round ball is similar in performance to a smoothbore musket, and the restriction of the spherical shape limits the sectional density possible for a lead projectile of a given bore diameter.
Shotgun slugs intended for use in smoothbore barrels need to be made out of very soft lead alloys or have a compressible sabot, as they must be able to fit through the restrictive choke present in most shotgun barrels.

Selection of best ammunition for a defensive shotgun
Slugs are huge hunks of soft lead, grooved on the sides to promote rotation and stability in flight.
Because slug loads must be carefully aimed like a rifle or handgun, their use ruins the shotgun's main advantage: superior hit probability.
The exception is the.410 shotgun (pronounced "four ten"), which is actually the bore diameter expressed in hundredths of an inch, in a manner similar to handgun and rifle calibers.

To determine penetration capability of the shotgun, the following types of targets were used: (a) a wooden cube of 500 x 500 x 300 mm; (b) steel plates attached tos wooden shield: (b1) 500 x 500 x 2.5 mm; (b2) 500 x 500 x 2.0 mm and (b3) 500 x 500 x 1.5 mm.
slugs (shell size 12/70 mm) were fired at a wooden cube at the disctance of 50 meters.

Slugs are considered as a single projectile, the same diameter as the inside of the bore.
Given these considerations, from the standpoint of overpenetration we feel that a 1oz slug equipped 12 gauge deployed in an urban environment is not nearly as dangerous as a centerfire carbine, expecially when considering the soft lead used in the construction of these slugs and their comparatively lower muzzle velocity.
Slugs designed for smoothbore barrels are generally of the traditional foster design, and have been subject to meaningful technological improvements over the years.

Shotgun slugs are stabilized in flight by the "shuttlecock" principal.
Slugs are sized to just fit the barrel, or sized to be placed inside a plastic shot cup.
Today's slugs available to the handloader are generally assembled with a folded crimp using plastic hulls.

Shotgun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike rifles, however, the long shotgun barrel is not for ballistic purposes; shotgun shells use small powder charges in large diameter bores, and this leads to very low muzzle pressures (see internal ballistics) and very little velocity change with increasing barrel length.
The shotgun is used for bird hunting, although it is also increasingly used in deer hunting in semi-populated areas where the range of the rifle bullet may pose too great a hazard.
Shotguns are normally used to hunt whitetail deer in the thick brush and briars of the south-eastern and upper midwestern US, where, due to the dense cover, ranges tend to be very close--25 meters or less.

Using slugs in a shotgun is a perfect solution to this only-one-gun problem.
This is very close to.30-06 impact, which suggests shotgun slugs are definitely not ineffective toys when it comes to dropping well-hit game in its tracks.
The bad news is twofold: First, shotgun slugs lose energy about twice as fast as jacketed rifle bullets do, which means a big 12 gauge slug hits less hard at 50 yards than a tiny.243 bullet does at 100 yards.

 Slug Comparison
Comparing slugs and shotguns from my early days of hunting more than three decades ago with today’s state-of-the-art, controlled-expansion projectiles is like juxtaposing the Wright brothers’ Kitty Hawk flying machine and the Space Shuttle.
The Hastings slug, introduced in 2004 in a 12-gauge, 11⁄4-ounce, 1500 fps magnum version and the 1020 fps Low Recoil-Youth version, is a soft lead slug encased in a non-discarding sabot and attached wad—its sabot sleeve works like a jacket on a rifle bullet.
The collapsible nature of the soft, conventional rifled slug at setback, when the primer is ignited and the slug is still in the chamber, has always been problematic because the slug doesn’t always spring back to the same shape in the barrel.

 Shotgun
Shotguns were also used by the US Marines in the Pacific jungle fighting during WW II and by the British during the 1950s in Malaysia.
The modern fighting shotgun, or "riotgun," is typically a pump action or semiautomatic 12 gauge shotgun with a 18 to 20 inch cylinder bore barrel.
Most people think that the trajectory of the 12 gauge rifled slug is close to that of a mortar, and since they don't think they could hit anything past 25 or 50 yards (which is probably true if they don't have a set of sights on their shotgun) they zero for slugs at 25 yards.

 Halfbakery: P90 inspired combat shotgun
Shotguns are sometimes the best suited weapon for the job, but due to frequent reloading they have to be passed up.
High capacity shotguns are already available and in use that use 20 round drums so weight must not be too much of an issue, but like I mentioned I was trying to avoid a simple drum because 1) it's baked and 2) they're clunky and get in the way.
This is about a shotgun with a magazine that fits length-ways along the top of the barrel to save space, increase ammo capacity and allow more in the way of ergonomics when it comes to shotguns.

Stars & Stripes Ammunition - Shotgun Ammunition (About Shotgun Slugs)
Although the sabot slug existed as far back as 1898, it was just a front heavy chunk of lead of smaller diameter than the bore with a special shape to resist flipping in flight that required no rifling to stabilize it.
The early sabot slugs weren’t dependant on rifling as the current designs are, but new sabot slug designs must only be fired in rifled barrels, or in the very least a rifled choke insert.
These slugs are suitable for most non-dangerous big game out to 100 yards or so, but don’t really have the energy and weight to reliably kill game beyond that, and their trajectories become quite curved beyond 100 yards making distant shots unlikely.

Winchester Ammunition is expanding its line of shotgun slug offerings with the addition of two new 20 ga. 3” loads, one in a sabot load in the Supreme® line and one Foster slug load in the Super-X® line.
Over the last few years, many deer hunters who use shotgun slugs to hunt deer in their area have switched to the 20 ga. The 20 ga. is much more comfortable to shoot, but can still deliver excellent ballistics.
With the introduction of more and more 20 ga. slug guns, these two new loads from Winchester are destined to become popular choices for deer hunters for years to come.

Shotgun slugs can be rifled -- this is supposed to make them spin in the air and thus improve their flight length and accuracy.
One reason hunters use slugs is to hunt deer in states that ban the use of rifles and/or buckshot ammo.

Are You Using the Right Slug for Your Shotgun?
Once all the powder is burned and the slug reaches terminal velocity (and the rifling has imparted spin to the slug), the barrel's job is done.
Then, once the shotgun and slugs are sighted in, the hunter will shoot a few times at 100 yards to determine how much drop the slug has at that range.

24hourcampfire: Why are shotgun slugs made to expand?
I've only used Forster pattern slugs but suspect that if you want a non expanding projectile you might consider one of the sabot loads if your barrel is rifled, or a Brenneke slug if not and you wish for something less likely to look like an ashtray after the fact.
Shotgun sabots that are wasp waisted stabilize by shape and rifling really doesn't help them much if at all.
I shot one deer with such a slug and it caused the greatest amount of damage I have ever seen and yet it still took us about an hour to recover the animal from a neighbouring property where the neighbour was not too fond of hunters.

Regular sabot slugs tend to distort a little after the ride down the smooth bore and slamming into the rifling in the choke tube, but they still shoot better from a screw on rifled tube than a smooth bore.
Do not try using the foster slugs meant for smooth bores with a rifled barrel or rifled choke tube, as leading will be a problem and accuracy won’t be as good as it should be.
