Commonly, the psychic handles some jewelry or clothing, claims to be able to see or feel the object's aura, and begins shotgunning.

Michael Shermer of Skeptic magazine calls Van Praagh "the master of cold-reading in the psychic world." Sociologist and student of anomalies, Marcello Truzzi of Eastern Michigan University, was less charitable.
The only skepticism shown by Grodin was in wondering whether Van Praagh wasn't really reading the minds of the audience and the callers, rather than getting his messages from "the other side".
What saves him much of the time is shotgunning which ends with the ambiguous question “am I right?” and the client saying “yes,” though we have no idea what the “yes” is in response to.

 Skeptic's Dictionary: psychic detectives
They use the shotgun approach to providing psychic information, i.e., they provide a large quantity of information, some of which is bound to fit the case.
"Shotgunning" relies on confirmation bias and cold reading: the cop tunes in to the info that is correct and ignores what isn't and unknowingly gives cues to the psychic as he or she fires salvo after salvo.
CSICOP (The Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal), is that it keeps some sort of check on the volcanic rush of psychic dust that is constantly being spewed into the atmosphere.

Fall, 2005 Troubleshooting Professional Magazine: Shotgunning
Shotgunning is an excellent idea when dealing with old components that should have been replaced under a preventive maintenance program.
To be appropriate, the shotgunned parts should be cheap relative to the entire repair.
Given the cost of the shotgunned parts is a small portion of the total bill, I think this is fair and ethical.

Tomorrow is Loyalty Day, so pack up the kids, take the dog and a cooler out to your favorite park to celebrate your loyalty to the country you live in.
Party down, throw your hands up and paint your chest red white and blue, but in between shotgunning beers, remember that for all that it lacks in tradition, being that it's only one year old, Loyalty Day makes up with its gravitas.
It may sound like a syrupy-sweet Hallmark holiday, but the fact is, the idea of loyalty has made me think deeply about my beliefs in the United States.

Finally, the jihadists get to ISOLATION OF THE TOXIN AND ITS PURIFICATION.
Since they don't know what methods have been used by national biowarfare programs and are unfamiliar with the great amount of scientific literature on the isolation and characterization of the botulism toxin, they wing it by shotgunning a few briefly described methods taken from first year biochemistry lab.
Lucky you, I once taught biochemistry lab and recognized them.
