Grandmaster Shoto Tanemura was born on the 28th of August 1947, in the small town of Matsubushi, which is located in Saitama prefecture some 25 miles Northeast of Tokyo.
Coming from a warrior heritage his father, Sadatsune Tanemura, was the 17th family head of a Samurai tradition whose roots extend to those of royalty as well as having blood lines from the famous Daimyo of the Sasaki and Takeda families.
The young Shoto Tanemura was taught from the age of nine by his father and father's uncle Kakunosuke Yamazaki, who was an 8th dan in the Onoha Itto ryu.

Both Tanemura and Hatsumi try to stay away from the term "ninjutsu" when referring to their system due to the stereo type the mass majority has on that term.
Which is why Tanemura calls his system Genbukan Ninpo Bugei and Hatsumi's is Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu and not ninjutsu.
