COMICON.com: YOU SAY SHOUJO I SAY SHOJO: COMICS FOR GIRLS
Shoujo is a term that encompasses a number of distinctive styles and themes, catering to a broad range of tastes in order to cover the widest possible female market.
Even in shoujo with plots as shallow as puddles, the heroine is challenged to change in some way, whether it is to save the world, stop a war, stand up to bullies, or just to accept herself.
Shoujo is, however, populated by some of the nastiest, meanest characters you're ever likely to meet, making the argument that women are more ruthless to their characters than men are.

Article: Shounen vs Shoujo, by Lianne   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Shoujo has its fair share of superhero stories--take Sailor Moon, for example, and all the "magical girl" (yes, that's the name of a genre) manga like it--but shoujo features many titles about nothing special at all: just a girl, and the boy she's in love with, and their romantic hijinks.
Shoujo is usually more individualistic, where things centralize more on the lead's personal development and that of her mate.
Shoujo color art is usually superior, with breathtaking color palettes and artistic styling as opposed to shounen's simple "colored-in covers" feel of most of its color work.

Big Apple Anime Fest - Shoujo - 2003
The shoujo style and its rising attraction in the U.S. was the focus of a Saturday convention panel.
Shoujo is more decorative, almost making each panel like a painting, and i think that's what fascinates me the most." Keith Mayerson, an artist who also is an instructor at the School of Visual Arts, agrees on the richness of shoujo art and the way it's used to show a character's feelings.
The shoujo animation expert on the panel was a male; Yasuhiro Irie, the director of Vision of Escaflowne and Rahxephon.

Shoujo tends to shift with the scene, creating scenes that tend to flow together to show mood or feeling (this is more apparent in shoujo manga rather than anime, as panel layout and overlays tend to illustrate this kind of method to telling the story).
Shoujo anime and manga, because they tend to be more concerned with feeling and the creation of a developmental story, lean towards a focus on the relationship and interaction of characters.
Shoujo is greatly known among anime and manga fans alike today, but a subcategory of it has probably been one of the most influential not only in shoujo itself, but anime/manga in general.

Few shoujo can escape a little bit of romance, and what Hagio serves up is an exciting sort of romance, a spunky girl who is fighting not only against her own destiny, but her own gender.

Article: She Was Asking For It, by Lianne and NotHayama   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Unfortunately, many of these shoujo heroines are willing to be victims of their own romances, relinquishing all control of their lives, relationships, and bodies to someone who's dangerously unqualified or painfully unworthy.
Shoujo series in this tier usually feature a strong-willed girl and her bad boy, but these bad boys tend to be more troubled, aggressive, and even dangerous.
Dangerous shoujo themes are often presented in colorful and romantic packages with significant doses of realism, and when few people comment on how said themes should be treated as escapist fantasies as opposed to touching love stories, that's when we're afraid of readers subliminally idealizing abuse.

In anime, a sub-genre of the "shoujo" anime/manga type story is "mahou shoujo" (magical girl), which has female protagonists using magical powers to accomplish their goals or mission.
A sub genre of this is "mahou shoujo", which means "magical girl" and refers to those shows that revolve around one or more females with magical or mystical powers (such as Sailor Moon, where ordinary female high school students turn into uniform-wearing magical fighters).
Like its counterpart, shoujo, many females are as attracted to this genre of anime as the boys are and enjoy it as much.
