 Shoulder-Launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon
The Shoulder-Launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon is a shoulder-launched missile weapon with the primary function of being a portable anti-armor rocket launcher.
Although the weapon can be fired from the off-hand, kneeling, and prone positions, the prone position is generally not used, as the shockwave from the weapon tends to form a "bubble" around the weapon, and one's legs, when subject to the shockwave, become very sore.
Positions are interspersed throughout the rifle platoon, where they have maximum visibility along the most likely avenues of approach, the better to serve as company-level anti-armor weapons.

Post war, the bigger and longer-range AT-4 missile and the Shoulder-launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon (SMAW) became the Marine Corps' rockets of choice.
Older versions of Talley Defense Systems' M-72 light antitank weapon (LAW) were used extensively during the Vietnam War, where their performance showed that only larger, shoulder-fired rockets would stop a Soviet tank.
At under $2,500 per weapon, it is slightly cheaper than the M136/AT-4, more compact, and weighs only half as much.
