  Shounen - Anime News Network
The most obvious and common example of shounen is "fighting" anime, where extremely powerful warriors duke it out amongst each other with various forms of martial arts and superpowers.
Other examples of non-fighting shounen anime are the sports anime like Initial D that are starting to make an impact in the West.
Above violence or combat, one could say the overarching characteristic of shounen anime is a fast-paced story where action and adrenalin are privileged over plot.

 AnimeInfo.org - Anime University - CORE 105: (Section 002) Shounen Basics - Lesson 1
Shounen anime is one of the most popular sub-genres of the anime medium, and is easily one of the big factors in anime's rise in Japan from the time of World War II to today.
Shounen anime stories are more often than not action-packed, fast paced, and focus on such items as violence, power, and stunning visuals.
Shounen's focus on action and its prominent, heroic characters makes it some of the most well-liked and popular types of anime that's out there.

  Anime Project Genres
Shounen contains elements and art styles that are made to appeal to the coarser sex - the kind of material that is generally more violent, less focused on character interactions, and at least modestly stocked with rounded feminine surfaces.
For instance, emotional iconography isn't used as much in shounen, or at least not at the level it is utilized in shoujo.
In much the same way, shounen anime is an umbrella genre for many sub-genres, such as mecha, action, sports, comedy, and hentai.

Sequential Tart: Atsukamashii Onna - Guys Playing Games - Shounen Anime and Manga (vol V/iss 4/April 2001)
Shounen, not to be confused with shounen-ai, are manga and anime directed at a male audience.
Though shounen manga are ostensibly directed at boys under 18, the same way that shoujo is directed at girls, there is both gender and age crossover in audiences.
Shounen manga has particular resonance for a culture in which hard work and loyalty has traditionally been rewarded with support from the community, and is reflected in material security and wealth.

Article: Shounen vs Shoujo, by Lianne
There are actually sub-categories within shounen and shoujo (little boys as opposed to older boys, elementary school girls vs. high school girls, etc.), but this article's purpose is to generalize and summarize, so we'll just stick to trends.
Shounen manga is usually much more hesitant to let cast members go.
Shounen manga usually gives its male characters ridiculously spiky hair, its girls big eyes and chests, and is very cavalier about nudity.

Yes, the plot of Shounen no Pheromone is nothing but long string of convenient plot devices and cliche characters, but Yuuya successfully pulled me into Shounen's adorable world in truly feel good fashion, despite the fact that I knew full well what was going to happen next every step of the way.
I really do like Shounen no Pheremone, despite the fact that neither the art nor the story is spectacular.

Since it's such a stretch for me to say anything more than what Matthew has, and I'm rather pressed for time, I think I'll probably stop blogging Zettai Shounen if it doesn't pick up with the next episode, to be honest.
ED - Shounen Humming (Masumi Ito) - Masumi Ito's voice (Scrapped Princess ED, Haibane Renmei ED) is one of those that is sometimes great and sometimes a bit obnoxious, but the song is really nice here.
Read Matthew's entry for the full synopsis given that I've missed out rather a lot of detail, but Zettai Shounen seems to have an awful lot going on - there's a great deal of mystery about not only Wakkun, but all the human characters as well.

I believe it has happened to every fan girl out there who has picked a Shounen Ai or Yaoi doujin and automatically fallen for the sugary-sweet, romantic story, maybe just for the male eye-candy.
Nowadays it's rare to find an anime or manga series that lacks even slightest shounen ai strokes, or at least the presence of an adrogynous character (whom, as a side note I'll add are usually the most popular characters).
That, if you ask me, is an evident sign of the fact both Shounen Ai and Yaoi are extremely popular worldwide, and therefore have come to stay.
