Being Charlie Kaufman - [Sunday Herald]
Characters in films of the last two decades are less likely to speak to each other than shout instructions in the height of crisis, moan in the heat of passion, expose plotline in the guise of conversation, or count the beats to a punchline.
Film: In an age when screenwriters are less important than accountants, it takes a special kind of talent to get Hollywood to make films as weird and wonderful as Being John Malkovich and Adaptation.
The worthy literary adaptation Ð the subject of Kaufman and Jonze's new film Ð remains the province of middle-brow intellectual ambition.

DVD Review - The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal
Arnold Leibovit’s 1985 documentary "The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal" is not so much a critical expose of Pal’s output as an unabashed fan letter, a "thank you" printed on celluloid rather than paper.
The films of George Pal nourished the hungry imaginations of many a child, both big and little.
A photo and production art gallery is notable for the inclusion of Pal’s elaborate and opulent sketches for such films as "Time Machine" and "Grimm." An interview with Pal to promote his 1968 film "The Power" and home movies of Pal in Europe show Pal in a personable and inviting light.

The script adaptation is surprisingly faithful to Lansdale’s original story (even going so far as to include the line “mucho mojo,” a shout-out to Lansdale’s excellent ‘Hap and Leonard’ novels), and allows both actors, though most notably Campbell, to do their thing.

Queerios - A review of "Times Square" with Tim Curry
Times Square was Tim Curry's second theatrical film after Rocky (the first afterwards being The Shout).
Times Square has been noted in works on gay and lesbian cinema, and Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill has said in "OutPunk" that she is fond of Times Square and planning to collaborate with a friend on a kind of collage-documentary film about these early "punk girl" films.
The movies had no idea what to do with her in the 80s, and despite critical praise (they unanimously hated the movie, but loved her) her career didn't take off; she was Darcy (another punk) on The Guiding Light, and appeared in the 1988 film D.O.A. (shot in Austin).

The film as a whole takes a little while setting itself up, but it's all for the good; I think you'll appreciate it in the end.

This made no sense whatsoever in the context of the film or otherwise, which undoubtedly tormented those who wracked their brains trying to figure it out, but it was a neat wink at the original in that they both involved the desecration of highly recognizable American symbols.
My gripe with the final twist is that it shifts the drama from the realm of the sociological to the realm of the psychoanalytic.
They all had similar twists, in which what appeared to be the story was deconstructed and revealed to be the lead character's subjective misinterpretation of reality.

His is a palpable and conflicted presence that lends the film an air of edginess and personal dilemma, as his character fights not only the external forces raging around him but the internal ones challenging his decisions and world view as a hero from a distant shore.
This is an impressive film from the start as it opens onto the raw and unforgiving landscapes of Iceland itself.
