Show Boat (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Show Boat is the name of a musical film based on the stage musical of the same name by Jerome Kern (music) and Oscar Hammerstein II(script and lyrics), which Hammerstein adapted from the novel by Edna Ferber.
This was the only film version of Show Boat to be given a road show presentation, and the only one of the three film versions to run over two hours (the stage version ran three hours originally, and was filmed in 1936 and 1951 at a length of slightly less than two hours).
"Show Boat" was remade in 1951 by MGM in Technicolor, starring Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner, Howard Keel, Joe E. Brown, Marge Champion, Gower Champion, William Warfield, Robert Sterling, Agnes Moorehead and Leif Erickson.

They took tryouts of "Show Boat" to Washington, Pittsburgh (it played the old Nixon Theater for a week in November), Cleveland and Philadelphia before its Dec. 27, 1927, opening at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York.
"Show Boat," which spans the period from the 1880s to the Roaring '20s, tells the story of a floating theater called the Cotton Blossom and the performers who inhabit it or, to their heartbreak, are banished from it.
Julie, the show's leading lady who is happily married to the leading man, is the product of a mixed marriage.

Show Boat marked Helen Morgan's last film appearance – and despite the fact that she apparently had to have coffee poured into her, or even had to be thrown into a cold shower between takes, it's easy to see why she was one of the chanteuses of her era.
The movie's not perfect, but it's primary flaws are those of a rather soapy stage original and a book that places all the most memorable songs – "Make Believe," "Can't Help Lovin' That Man of Mine" and "Ol' Man River" – at its outset.
