The American Experience | Quiz Show Scandal | People & Events | The Rise of TV Quiz Shows
The beloved big-band show, the sportscast, the mystery hour, even the soap opera, were transformed into some kind of prize-giving game, quiz, contest or jackpot.
The show aired for 14 years, until its finale in 1952, and was noteworthy not only for its success, but for its integrity.
The show caused reverberations throughout television, opening the floodgates to an unprecedented wave of quiz shows in the latter half of the 1950s.

Kevin Brownlow did a restoration of Show People that adds a composed score by the superb Carl Davis and a brief scene of Billy Boone showing Peggy Pepper how to put on movie make-up (which is quite sweet; I miss it in the TCM version).
This $800 dress, worn by Marion Davies in "Show People" was ruined by seltzer water--deliberately and as part of the plot--in a comedy scene.
Show People is both funny and touching, full of inside jokes as well as an insider's peek into Hollywood at the end of the silent era.

 Salon.com People | Chuck Barris
The wave never let up: "The People's Court," which debuted in 1981, brought back the old '50s format of the real-life courtroom drama, but where shows such as "They Stand Accused" had used ad-libbing actors, "The People's Court" used actual folks, who agreed to have their actual small-claims court cases adjudicated on the show.
People magazine called the show "the 'Gong Show' of U.S. jurisprudence" and its retired judge, Joe Wapner, a serious version of Barris.
The show's talentless performers became the "Stupid Human Tricks" contestants on David Letterman -- the same David Letterman who used to be a panelist on "The Gong Show," where he no doubt learned the trick of using stagehands as entertainers.

That 80's Show   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
That 70's Show is at least as loose with that, but most of the period touches are left in the background or serve as props to set up broad comedy that doesn't HAVE to take place in 1979.
To the hard-core critics of the show, you have some good points but don't forget that characters, especially sit-com characters, are supposed to be a bit over-the-top in order to punctuate the atmosphere of the show.
Maybe the reason so many people hated the show was because the 80's decade was grotesque, in which case the show was spot-on in using shallow, self-indulgent characters.

As for him cheapening the show, the whole point of the show was supposed to be a satirical view of the news and culture.
The Daily Show is one of the best sources of news available to us in the U.S. While Jon Stewart repeatedly claims that they're "a fake news show", his show seems to be the only one that's willing to criticize the hypocrisy of not only this administration, but the administration before.
The show's life and comedy is slowly been strangulated by this political python that has been allowed to grip the show by producers who forgot the name of their network....

 Self-referential movies: Show People
Show People probably never meant to be an end-of-an-era classic—who knew that the stock market would soon crash or that talking pictures would reshape the industry?
In Show People, the girl is played by Marion Davies; she's not as striking looking as Colleen Moore in Ella Cinders but she's very funny and lively.
Show People contains wonderful footage of Hollywood in the 20s, including the gates of long-vanished studios, casual movie-making on the streets of Los Angeles, newly-built Beverly Hills mansions, location trips to the surrounding countryside.

Opinion: Dog show people work hard to rescue shelter animals
However, if she had attended the AKC Eukanuba National Championship dog show held in Tampa Jan. 15-16 and visited the 125-plus individual "Meet the Breed" booths, she would have found a large majority of them promoting breed rescue and advocating the adoption of purebred shelter dogs.
People involved in dog showing are much less likely to have their dogs end up in shelters, because their puppies are usually accompanied by a contract requiring an unhappy owner to return the dog rather than simply leave at a shelter.
When the breeder is not known, breed people will make every attempt to adopt the dog from the shelter and place it in a new, loving, permanent home.

 Salon.com People | Chuck Barris
When one of his shows, "The Parent Game," was dropped from the NBC schedule before the first episode aired in 1972, Barris bought back the pilot and sold the show to local stations one at a time.
Other shows followed: There was "The Game Game," which was kind of complicated -- a contestant and three celebrities trying to figure out what a panel of psychologists would say was the best solution to a problem -- and not successful, validating Barris' theory that the simpler the show, the greater the chance of success.
Also in 1978, the Popsicle Twins appeared on "The Gong Show." Barris used to keep the NBC censors off the show's back by throwing sacrifices at them -- acts he knew the censors wouldn't approve, but that would distract them from the acts he wanted on the air.

QJER 19, 2003: Danaher, Moriarty and Danaher - social entrepreneurship - Australian show people - rural communities   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Drawing on ongoing research (Danaher, 1998, 2001a, 2001b) into the educational aspirations, experiences and opportunities of the show people, the authors of this paper use that paradox as a springboard for highlighting the multiple links and associations necessary to supporting rural education and hence crucial to understanding the proposition of education as community development.
Despite this internal differentiation, show people are conscious of their perceived difference from permanently resident Australians (although many of them have their own permanent residences in addition to their mobile caravans) and of the educational consequences of that difference.
The authors are grateful to the Australian show people, and to the Principal and staff members of the Queensland School for Travelling Show Children and to the Executive Director of the Education Queensland District in which the school is located, for their support and encouragement of the research project reported here.

Anyway, most people who act as anime elitists are wrapped up in self importance and are really not worth listening to....but I will anyway because I like to argue, for you see, I am also a prick.
People who get upset when their favourite anime is mocked do need to grow thicker skin, but I don't think they should have to stand people making fun of them themselves for it.
And people who blindly follow one or two anime and aren't willing to admit its faults are annoying.

 Life of a Show dog?
As well, show people are kept very up to date on the best nutritional foods to feed their dogs.
A show dog IS, and must be, in TOP physical shape as well as "beautiful" - movement in the show ring is often more important than pure cosmetic appeal - and a dog with a lack of muscle tone WILL NOT compete successfully.
This is every bit as much a generalization as the one I am answering about "show people" and the quality of life of their dogs, but "if the shoe fits, wear it".
