Topic: Show election

Election - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The universal acceptance of elections as a tool for selecting representatives in modern democracies is in sharp contrast with the practice in the democratic archetype, ancient Athens, where elections were considered an oligarchic institution and where most political offices were filled using sortition.
When elections are called, politicians and their supporters attempt to influence policy by competing directly for the votes of constituents in what are called campaigns.
In order for democratic elections to be fair and competitive, opposition parties and candidates must enjoy the rights to freedom of speech, assembly, and movement as necessary to voice their criticisms of the government openly and to bring alternative policies and candidates to the voters.

Show election - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Show elections are a common event in dictatorial regimes that still feel the need to establish some element of public legitimacy.
Show elections were commonly seen in the Soviet Union, as well as dictatorships such as Iraq, Uganda, North Korea, and Turkmenistan.
The "results" of a show election are frequently one-sided to the point of absurdity, with leaders claiming mandates of 90 percent or higher; this rarely occurs in a free democratic election.

 Election result maps
The (contiguous 48) states of the country are colored red or blue to indicate whether a majority of their voters voted for the Republican candidate (George W. Bush) or the Democratic candidate (John F. Kerry) respectively.
The presidential election is not decided on the basis of the number of people who vote each way, however, but on the basis of the electoral college.
Thus this map shows at a glance both which states went to which candidate and which candidate won more votes -- something that you cannot tell easily from the normal election-night red and blue map.

Harvard Gazette: KSG polls show election interest high
Two polls this month from the John F. Kennedy School of Government show that a sizeable minority of universities are failing their obligation to help register collegiate voters and, despite that, young voter interest in the 2004 election is higher than four years ago.
The Vanishing Voter survey showed that half of young adults 30 or under had a conversation within the past day about the election, compared with 25 percent during a similar survey at the same point in the 2000 campaign.
The Vanishing Voter survey showed that the war in Iraq remains the election's hottest issue, with 43 percent of all voters choosing Iraq over the economy as the issue "of greater concern." Thirty-seven percent said the economy was of greater concern.

As a legal noose appears to be tightening around the Bush/Cheney/Rove inner circle, a shocking government report shows the floor under the legitimacy of their alleged election to the White House is crumbling.
Jesse Jackson, among others, has asserted that "public elections must not be conducted on privately-owned machines." The CEO of one of the most crucial suppliers of electronic voting machines, Warren O'Dell of Diebold, pledged before the 2004 campaign to deliver Ohio and thus the presidency to George W. Bush.
Far from what election theft skeptics have long asserted, the GAO findings confirm that the electronic network on which 800,000 Ohio votes were cast was vulnerable enough to allow a a tiny handful of operatives -- or less -- to turn the whole vote count using personal computers operating on relatively simple software.
