  Show runner Information
Based on feedback from the studio and the network that is the primary purchaser (unless the show is in syndication), the show runner must tailor the series to fit studio's and network's scheduling and market demands.
The show runner has to fit the episodes into a season budget that will fluctuate based on which markets the show has been sold into (an even greater factor for syndicated series).
While he or she is hired by the studio or network, the show runner’s role is as the final arbiter on the creative and financial decisions for the show; it is the show runner's mandate to fit them within the parameters specified by his or her employer.

Who runs the show? Often, it's the writer
Most of the time the head writer is the show runner, the person responsible for shaping the program's creative direction and character development, not to mention production details such as casting, music and staying within budget.
Jeff Greenstein, who was co-creator and co-show runner of the Fox 1995-1996 sitcom "Partners," said the show runner calls the shots on every aspect of the program, and usually acts as a filter during the writing process.
Sometimes the creator of a show may not have the producing experience to be a show runner, so another executive producer is brought in to oversee the show.

Eye Weekly - Where writers are gods - 08.12.04
Here's how a TV show gets made: someone comes up with an idea for a show, writes the first episode and show "bible" (details on the setting and characters, their pasts and futures, etc.) and pitches this package to a studio and/or network.
If the show makes the cut, that writer becomes the show runner and hires some writers for his or her team.
Episodes are inspired by the team, outlined by the show runner, scripted by one writer (or by writing partners) and then polished by the show runner before getting delivered to cast and crew.

Writers Store: Show Runner: Producing Variety and Talk Shows for Television - Steve Clements
The show runner is the television producer who commands a show’s moment-to-moment, day-to-day details.
The show runner hires and supervises the staff, decides what will be included in each show, co-ordinates the casting of each segment, makes sure that a show adheres to its budget, and oversees a production’s flow of activities in conjunction with other producers, staff members, technical crews, and post-production personnel.
Filled with examples from actual television shows, it covers: making, pitching, and selling a pilot show; production development; a show runner’s duties and weekly schedule; working with other members of a production’s staff and crew; producing a season of shows.

Bernie Mac rebounds, but can his show?
The poor showing of the season premiere, which attracted less than 4 million viewers, has prompted speculation in the industry that the end may be near.
And while one-hour TV dramas are the current rave of critics and viewers, "The Bernie Mac Show" is one of the remainders of a disappearing genre -- the family situation comedy with a comedian at its center.
Meanwhile, Fox and producers of the show maintain confidence that there is still plenty of life left in "The Bernie Mac Show," which will be more valuable in the syndication market with five years of episodes.

The smart show runners understand that the director is the neck and the funnel who weaves all of the production's needs together — my needs, their needs, the needs of the cast, of the crew, of the network.
Things tend to proceed with far greater unanimity and cooperation when both director and show runner are able to remove themselves from the equation and peer solely at what serves the good of a given show.
As much as smart show runners generally don't try to shackle their directors, so too the savvy episodic directors know better than to insist that their style and attitude predominate, no matter the series.

Throughout Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote's careers in over two dozen Warner Bros. cartoons chronicling the duo's encounters, their classic chase formula has never lost its tension.
Wile E.'s ineptitude, possibly a by-product of his distracted obsession with catching Road Runner, is compounded only by the Acme company's products - which may work for other customers, but seem never to work for Wile E., who repeatedly risks life and limb counting on their effectiveness.
When the speedy Road Runner whizzes by, friction causes the road and Wile E.'s feet to catch on fire, sending the coyote into a frantic craze, in which he attempts to capture his prey with a rope, a sling-shot, a rotating circle of spiked balls, a booby-trapped ladder, and a pile of rocks.

Runner’s diet: food as fuel - Eating Well - MSNBC.com
We all know that food is the body’s fuel, but many of us don’t know which ones can optimize our energy when we’re working out in the gym, training for a marathon, or walking a mile or two.
When I met Karen to go over nutrition with her, she hadn’t given much thought to her eating habits — food was food — and she wasn’t aware of how much her diet could affect her training for the marathon.
Here we need to differentiate between recreational runners, who run three miles or less at a time or engage in as much as an hour of moderate physical activity, and endurance runners who run six or more miles at a time or participate in more than an hour of cross training, running, or biking.
