The Showboat is the summer theatre venue for the University of Minnesota's Department of Theatre Arts and Dance.
Over the course of six years, the Showboat went through a flurry of design drawings, fundraising campaigns, and contract bids until October 1999, when the money needed was raised and a contractor was selected.
Invited to the dinner as a supporter of the Showboat, he was astonished to find friend and fellow USITT member Larry Hill, as well as his brother, Bruce Brockman, part of the audience.

The demise of the Showboat property began in the late 1980s when bigger resorts began sprouting on Las Vegas Boulevard, owners opened a new hotel-resort in Atlantic City and the neighborhood along Fremont Street began to decline.
Finally, the PBA lost its weekly spot on ABC Sports in 1997, and the Showboat's Tour event lost some of its luster when it was moved from its traditional winter date to June in 1998 and '99.
The Showboat's importance in bowling history was best stated by Lonnie Walicek after he won the last PBA tournament in the same center where he won two national collegiate titles with Wichita State.

Her luminous rendition of the chilling "Mis'ry's Comin' Aroun'" (which was cut from the original for being too operatic) sets the stage for the evil which is about to tear apart a riverboat family and change all their lives.
The secondary characters in "Showboat" are so beautifully drawn that you miss them when the story leaves them behind: Queenie (Boston) cooks for the performers and is surrogate mother to the Captain's young daughter.
The real star of "Showboat" though is Solomon-Glover, planting his feet way down into the stage to deliver that stirring anthem "Ol' Man River" which speaks to a need for survival and dignity in any age, especially our own.
