comic books of the 1960's / 1960s comic books
A study of some of the best Marvel comic books of the sixties is coming, but someone else will have to do that, because I preferred the simple and less serious approach to storytelling that DC took to the angst ridden Marvel heroes of the time.
Kurt Shaffenberger was one of the slickest artist in DC's stable, and the 'Lois Lane' comics of the sixties were a lot of fun to read mostly because of his unique renderings of the DC stable of characters.
These comic books are ice cream for the brain, and much of the reason they are so much fun has to do with Shaffenberger's pristine style and the light-hearted, nonsensical stories.

Showcase (comics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is generally cited as the beginning of the Silver Age of Comic Books, as it was followed by the successful updating of several other Golden Age superheroes, and an upswing in the popularity of comics (superheroes especially).
In 2005, DC began publishing thick, fl-and-white reprints of older material under the umbrella title Showcase presents.
However, DC decided to capitalize on Kirby's recent move from Marvel and launch the books as full series instead of using Showcase as the standard tryout.

DC Comics should not be confused with British comic publisher D.C. Thomson.
DC's extended storylines in which Superman was killed and Batman was crippled, resulted in dramatically increased sales, but the increases were as temporary as the substitutes, and sales dropped off as industry sales went into a major slump.
DC entered into a publishing agreement with Milestone Media that gave DC a line of comics featuring a culturally and racially diverse range of superhero characters; although the Milestone line ceased publication after a few short years, it yielded the popular animated series Static Shock.

Their adventures followed the flow of other DC comics starting with "Strange Adventures", veering toward superheroics (during the Bat Craze), to occult menaces, through Bermuda Triangle weirdness, and finally to cancellation (1979).
DC pushed "adventure" titles such as The Shadow and Tarzan (and paid to license both).
In Amalgam Comics, the Challs were amalgamated with their super-powered counterparts, the Fantastic Four, to form the Challengers of the Fantastic.

Showcase Presents Superman - PopMatters Comic Book Review
DC is no slouch, of course, but has been slightly more conservative.
DC's answer to the Marvel's Essential series finally offers readers the chance to explore the storied, strange and sometimes plain corny history of their favorite heroes.
To enjoy these stories, one has to distance oneself from today's continuity driven comics environment and think like a child of the Silver Age, when attaching the word "atomic" was all a writer had to do to fire a reader's imagination.

Sword & Sorcery - Your resource for fiction, interviews, articles, information & more
The cover of DC Comics’ Showcase #82, from May 1969 actually bills that issue's Nightmaster story as “Beginning A Great New Sword & Sorcery Saga.” Nightmaster was a sword-wielding hero who wore superhero-ish blue tights and adventured in an alternate dimension.
Crom, Nightmaster, and Clawfang are probably the earliest examples of comic book characters specifically geared toward the concept of sword-and-sorcery as a genre, but there were several characters in the history of comics who would fit the genre requirements.
DC was trying out quite a few new titles and several of them were S&S. These included Claw the Unconquered, Kong the Untamed, and Stalker the adjective-less.

Redefining comics or demonstrating an ignorance of the breadth of what the term refers to is a distraction that does not service your point.

Sometimes entire pages were able to be reduced in size to fit the manga format, sometimes Wendy would take a panel or two from one page of a story, add some new art, and fit the resulting action into the appropriate place in a different, but related, story.
