To be honest, "Showgirls" probably isn’t as bad as some critics have made it out to be, but it’s still pretty bad.
What makes "Showgirls" such a conundrum is the talent involved in the film.

Maligned by many critics upon its original release, SHOWGIRLS has since become a true camp classic, revived for midnight showings and beloved for its decadence, high nudity yield, and outrageously catty dialogue (courtesy of screenwriter Joe Eszterhas).
Showgirls is the capper in writer Joe Eszterhas' storied career.
Then he writes Showgirls, an ultra-explicit NC-17 drama about a Las Vegas showgirl who goes from nobody to "Goddess" by playing the Power Game better than everyone else.

A film scholars' round table on "Showgirls." It sounds like the setup for a punch line about those wacky academics who find value in any kind of popular culture, the perfect new joke for people who realize that their old gibes about the French and Jerry Lewis are getting a little tatty at the edges.
I first saw "Showgirls" a couple of weeks after it opened, in a sparse midweek evening crowd, and I was convinced I was watching a new camp classic.
I admit that my love for "Showgirls" has to do with my love for melodrama, for displays of flesh, and above all for the disreputable, which can be a way of keeping in touch with the rude energy that's at the heart of the appeal of movies.

I was told by a fairly reasonable friend of mine that she did not subscribe to the generally held belief that Showgirls was nothing but a putrid, trashy film, deserving all the criticism (and all the Golden Raspberry awards) it received.
Her claim was a rather interesting one, since we are talking about a person who went to a Baptist private school for 12 years, the sort of school whose rulebook looks as if it was written in the 1950`s, decrying rock music, and other such evils.
What Berkley s got in Showgirls is a more explicit version of her petulance routine from that Saturday morning teen show.

The intention of Showgirls, I suppose, is to cast some light on the cruel, backstabbing world of backstage Las Vegas.
It is not unlike the stage shows depicted here, disparaged by one character as dishonest, in the sense that for all the theatrical pretentions, people are only going to look at women.
Showgirls is exactly like that, and oh how pretentious it is! It tries so hard to be meaningful and fails so completely that it's pretty much unstomachable on any level.

Any reasonable viewer ought to be able to see that Verhoeven saw the raw ambition in her that was perfectly realized in Nomi, and that Taylor probably rightly suggests was a source of inspiration, and fear, for Berkeley herself.
