Shran and his people were convinced that the Vulcans were secretly using P'Jem to spy on the Andorians - a suspicion which later proved true when Captain Jonathan Archer exposed a secret Vulcan listening post at the monastery.
Shran was indebted to Archer for this, and later returned the favor by rescuing Archer and his officers from a terrorist attack on the world of Coridan.
Nearly Shran's entire crew were lost, and his lover, Talas, later died from wounds she received in a firefight that occurred when Shran, under the mistaken belief that Tellarites were responsible, attempted to coerce a confession from the Tellarite ambassador.

She held the rank of lieutenant, and served on the Andorian starship Kumari under the command of Commander Shran.
Sadly, Talas died in the line of duty in late 2154 when she was accidentally shot by a Tellarite ambassador.
At the last minute, Captain Archer substituted himself in the Tellarite's place; while Shran was reluctant to fight his friend Archer, the combat proceeded without incident (ending when one of Shran's antennae was sliced off, incapacitating but not killing him), and Shran's revenge was satisfied.

Shran of course declines but Archer points out that he was able to intercept the activation codes for the weapon and if the Andorians don't give him the weapon he'll detinate the weapon inside the Andorian hold.
Shran tries to call Archer's bluff so Archer has T'Pol activate the weapon, the weapon begins to charge up to prepare to overload in their hull and the Andorian's release the weapon at the last possible second.

Shran may not be Weyoun, but Jeffrey Combs is Jeffrey Combs, and his appearance in "Proving Ground" is like a godsend from beyond the borders of the Delphic Expanse.
Shran is a familiar face we respond to, because he has an actual personality, and personality is one thing that has been woefully lacking this season on Enterprise.
Shran is under orders from the Imperial Guard to steal the weapon for the Andorians as a means to deter a possible Vulcan invasion (the paranoia!).

Shran challenges her Tellerite attacker to a duel and threatens that if Archer prevents the duel to the death, the Andorians will withdraw from the tentative alliance.
Shran will not back down and the two fight, but Hoshi and Travis have researched the Andorian tradition even more, and learned that if Archer can disable Shran, the duel will be over.
Shran’s line about how maybe future starships would be named after his and Archer’s ships, if they do something historic, is ironic, given the news this week that UPN will not renew Enterprise.

After rescuing Shran and his crew the Enterprise becomes host to both sides with someone wanting to keep them at odds with each other.
Archer and Shran travel to Andoria to speak to the Aenar while Trip and T'Pal begin to construct their own device in hopes that the Aenar can help them stop the marauder ship.
Overall this is a stunning conclusion to the story arc and a terrific job by Jeffrey again as Shran.
