Practice tips: when playing Legato, it is important that you can you play each note smoothly and cleanly, if you are doing it properly, the listener should be able to differentiate between the picked and legato notes.
When playing Legato, it is important to keep the fingers of your fretting hand in a "box" position, as this will help you exert more power on the strings.
Last notes on techniques: it is important when practicing these techniques, to start slowly, and build up your speed gradually, as the proverb says "you can not run before you walk," so just be patient and it will pay off.

Shred - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shredding depends on the assumptions that files are not moved in the file system during their lifetime, which fails if defragmentation is done, and that they are overwritten in place, which may fail on modern file systems.
In the context of an electric guitar, "shredding" refers to a virtuosic, highly technical style of playing the instrument, as exemplified by the virtuosos of the eighties such as Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore, Greg Howe, Tony MacAlpine, Shawn Lane, Steve Vai or Yngwie J. Malmsteen.
In the context of skiing and snowboarding, "shredding" is slang for moving with speed and style.

Guitar:Lead Guitar and Rhythm Guitar - Wikibooks, collection of open-content textbooks
Another explanation of the difference between lead guitar and rhythm guitar is that they are two different parts of a band that happen to be played by the same instrument.
Rhythm guitar is characterized by sounding "chordy," that is, playing mostly chords in patterns.
Technique is less about expressiveness of individual notes, but about choosing good chords or chord voicings that enrich the overall sound, which may add its own expressive tone to the music.

Playing a beautiful trans-fl quilt top Johnny A. signature Gibson guitar through his trademark 30th Anniversary Marshall combos, the sound was simply perfect and the playing was stellar.
Guitar virtuoso Johnny A.'s newish project room allows him to write and record on his own schedule, which typically begins at the crack of dawn and continues on and off into the night.
Favoring a hollow-body electric guitar and supported by a solid five-piece band, he is a sucker for some classic sounds: bent-note blues and spaghetti western twang, jazz-inspired octave runs and hip modulations, finger-picked chords and flat-picked crescendos.

Bellas has achieved a rare and precarious balancing in his phenomenal playing on this album between his mesmerizing fluidity, captivating aggression, and precise articulation of notes to impart and project emotion and feeling that contribute to the culmination and the definition of his jaw-dropping, eye-widening style.
It is exactly this added dimension to Bellas' musicality that makes his well-established neoclassical repertoire of guitar technique work well in a manner that is new and refreshing rather than becoming redundant with his previous works because he has applied it to some very inventive scales, patterns, and chordal sequences.
His guitar style is firmly rooted in the neoclassical styling, and this is in ample evidence on this recording.

 Shredding. Part 1 - Fundamentals | Lessons @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com
There are hundreds, of techniques used in shredding, and to list them all would probably take up a full page on your Microsoft word, so let's just stick with the main ones for now.
You should be able to play your shred piece at whatever speed you wish: cranking up the distortion and just shredding straight out isn't going to help your technique at all.
I have to say, the song at the end is incredibly hard for a lesson called shredding fundamentals though i suppose after spending enough time getting it up to speed with the technique jam stated (along with a metronome etc) you would know the fundamentals.

 The Official Joe Stump website
He certainly doesn't dispel any of the Malmsteen comparisons in his technique or songwriting, but the unflinching accuracy of his blindingly fast picking, arpeggio sweeps, and unapologetically long solos is a convincing reminder of why that style was an exciting benchmark in the 80's.
Playing the part of a concert violinist with a pick and going off the notes-per-bar meter, Stump flawlessly runs through his minor scale vocabulary before culminating with volcanic eruptions of arpeggios that keep pace with the cycling chord changes.
Proving that a guitar virtuoso doesn't have to make an album all about himself, Joe does this entire body of work with class, dignity, and the willingness to let Reign Of Terror be a BAND instead of a one man show.

Guitar technique - shredding, playing information
In the 80's and 90's many guitar came into the fold for example Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and were labeled shredding players due their speed and technique.
Players like Yngwie Malmsteen have a classical influenced rock style of playing and he was strongly influenced by Deep Purple's Richie Blackmore whom chose to play in a rock style, uses classical runs including techniques such as pivoting, arpeggios, string skipping and counter pointing.
Some critiques to the style have stated that speed and complex technique has removed the natural feel and grove of playing which can be more inspiring to listen to.
