Shrewsbury was one of Labour's least anticipated 1997 gains; the party had never won here before and finished third in 1992 as indeed they had done for many years.
In the event, it was the sheer size of the national swing which catapulted 29-year old Paul Marsden into Parliament at the expense of Conservative whip Derek Conway, himself originally selected at a similar youthful age some 14 years earlier.
In fact the result here should not have been totally unexpected, as in 1995 Labour had been comfortably ahead in local elections to the borough of Shrewsbury and Atcham, which shares the same boundaries as the parliamentary constituency.

Crawley (3 Con gains to control) is perhaps the easiest target for the Conservatives as in 2005 the parliamentary constituency (that matches almost exactly the council area) recorded a 8.5% swing to the Conservatives leaving Laura Moffatt the MP by only 37 votes.
For the Conservatives to have an indication of a possible change in government in 2009/2010 they would need to win councils such as Nuneaton and Bedworth (7 gains), Plymouth (10 gains), and Wolverhampton (15 gains).
It was expected that Labour might end up losing councils rather than gaining them, but following the recent ructions in the Liberal Democrats over the resignation of Charles Kennedy as leader, people are now suggesting that there could be some major gains for Labour from the Lib Dems.
