Shringeri, 100kms from Udupi, is a wellknown centre of pilgrimage situated on the banks of the river Tunga and at the foot of the Sahya mountain - a part of the western ghats, in Chikmagalur district of Karnataka.
Shringeri is prominent amongst such places, the others being Puri, Dwaraka, Badrinath, Kashi and Kedarnath.
There are choultries and guest houses at Shringeri for the convenience of the pilgrims.

Shringeri is a big temple town and you get in touch with all the city effects immediately.

There is a tradition of independent texts and commentaries, particularly noteworthy is Lakshmidhara (17th-18th centuries) who wrote a commentary on the Yoginihrdaya.
The Shri Vidya has aligned itself with brahmanical or smarta orthopraxy, through tracing its guru lineage back to Shankara; through becoming adopted by the Shankaracharyas of Shringeri and Kanchipuram; through aligning itself with the Adi Shaivas of the Shaiva Siddhanta; and through shedding itself of its earlier Tantric heteropraxy.
The most important symbol in the Shri Vidya is the icon (yantra, cakra) of nine intersecting triangles within a 'circle' or lotus.

It is a T-junction, the road coming from Bangalore being the vertical arm of the T. The road to the left goes to Shringeri and the road to the right to Mangalore.
At about 8:30 we started walking from Agumbe with Mr Pai, along the Shringeri arm of the T, to a place where the road forked off.
Mahesh who had just emerged from the temple was the only one without shoes, so we sent him back to get the others.

Probably shankara must have reached some place on the bank of tungabhadra and then travelled upwards though its bank to reach shringeri.
He would not have known that it is called tunga there.

We had to leave our footwear a long place away from the temple and had to walk barefoot on the road, which was a terrible experience.
In Shringeri, after the visit to the temple, we went to the banks of the river Tunga, where people where feeding fishes.
The fished were huge and they flocked in large numbers to the banks to be fed. I could not stop myself from thinking how tasty they would be if they were friend and served to me. They were really huge and looked tasty!!!!
