They are mainly known in the West for the manga that they publish.
Some of the magazines they publish in Japan are Ribon, Margaret, Shounen Jump and the Japanese editions of Seventeen, Cosmopolitan and Playboy.

The new monthly magazine, to be launched in November 2002, will be patterned after Shueisha's Shonen Jump and will feature the manga from which many of the world's most popular anime properties such as Dragon Ball Z and Yu-Gi-Oh were derived.
Shueisha, the largest manga publisher in the world, has annual sales in excess of $600 million and a 30% share of the sizeable Japanese manga market.

Sometimes a story can be incredibly popular in Japan for a long time without international fans seeming to notice, but hopefully this is not one of them.
The art's not beautiful, but the characters' gag faces are very funny.

The publisher of works by cartoonist Ken Obata, the author of the famous "Death Note" manga who is under arrest for illegally possessing a knife, said it will not withdraw his books from store shelves until it gets to the bottom of the incident.
We are not considering immediately withdrawing his works from stores," the public relations division of Shueisha Inc. said.
Obata's works include the 23-volume "Hikaru no Go," which has sold 10 million copies, and the 12-volume "Death Note," which has sold some 20 million copies.
