Playing card - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Playing cards are often used as props in magic tricks, as well as occult practices such as cartomancy, and a number of card games involve (or can be used to support) gambling.
An early mention of a distinct series of playing cards is the entry of Charles or Charbot Poupart, treasurer of the household of Charles VI of France, in his book of accounts for 1392 or 1393, which records payment for the painting of three sets or packs of cards, which were evidently already well known.
Until August 4, 1960, decks of playing cards printed and sold in the United Kingdom were liable for taxable duty and the Ace of Spades carried an indication of the name of the printer and the fact that taxation had been paid on the cards.

Shuffle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shuffling is often followed by a cut, to ensure that the shuffler has not manipulated the outcome.
Because standard shuffling techniques are seen as weak, and in order to avoid "inside jobs" where employees collaborate with gamblers by performing inadequate shuffles, many casinos employ automatic shuffling machines which perform continuous shuffles on a pack of cards, and can produce any number of cards on demand.
The mathematician and magician Persi Diaconis is an expert on the theory and practice of card shuffling, and an author of a famous paper on the number of shuffles needed to randomize a deck, concluding that it did not start to become random until five good riffle shuffles, and was truly random after seven.

The origin of playing cards is obscure, but it is almost certain that they began in China after the invention of paper.
Wilkinson suggests in The Chinese origin of playing cards that the first cards may have been actual paper currency which were both the tools of gaming and the stakes being played for.

The cards are moved back into the center magazine by direct lateral movement of each shuffled stack, placing one stack on top of the other to stack all cards in a shuffled stack in the center magazine.
A first card mover is disposed at the top of the first magazine for individually engaging and moving cards from the top of the stack of cards in the first magazine horizontally and alternatively to the second and third magazine to cut the stack of unshuffled playing cards into two unshuffled stacks.

Shuffling a deck of playing cards
Shuffling a deck of cards is a little more tricky because you can't simply keep picking a number between 1 and 52 or you will almost certainly pick the same number more than once (and thus have duplicates of the same card).
It still isn't quite random enough, so next the dealer shuffles the cards and then either cuts the cards or has a rotating player (thus randomizing because no two players will usually pick the exact starting point) pick a place to cut the cards, essentially starting at a random point.
Line 10-14: the card is valid so add the card to the $deck array and then destroy its value in the $cards array so it cannot be chosen again.

USPC - A Brief History of Playing Cards
These fascinating identities, along with special designations for the other court cards, were bestowed by the French who were instrumental in bringing the pleasures of card play to people in Europe and the New World.
The documented history of card playing began in the 10th century, when the Chinese began using paper dominoes by shuffling and dealing them in new games.
Yankee ingenuity soon invented or adopted practical refinements: double-headed court cards (to avoid the nuisance of turning the figure upright), varnished surfaces (for durability and smoothness in shuffling), indexes (the identifying marks placed in the cards’ borders or corners), and rounded corners (which avoid the wear that card players inflict on square corners).

 Shuffled cards
Shuffling a new deck is widely said to result in an increase in entropy in the cards.
However, even if there are warnings by the instructor, the use of playing cards as a model is probably intellectually hazardous; these objects are so familiar that the student can too easily warp this macro analog of a microsystem into an example of actual entropic change in the cards.
A playing card or a billiard ball or a blue sock is a package, a sealed closed system, of energetic microstates whose numbers and types are not changed when the package is transported to a new site from a starting place.
