Shugo Tokumaru: Night Piece: Pitchfork Record Review
Shugo doesn't seem to fit into the glut of bedroom IDMers and their sound-alike electro-acoustic alchemy, and in addition to an obvious geographical contradiction, Shugo is just way too melodic for the stateside free-folk scene.
The song congeals unexpectedly but beautifully, and Shugo quickly reclaims the melody for his voice, buttressing it with stringed confidence and, by the song's outro, a little bit of bravado.
Then, a chase scene: "Paparazzi" is Shugo's virtuosic take on the theme from "The Benny Hill Show", a cartoonish one-man mummer's parade that doesn't strut so much as run for its life, with an unexpected hammock-swaying break here and there between the ensuing fretted mischief.

Shugo Tokumaru was born in Tokyo in 1980.
His first concert, for a Map Magazine evening, was done on the later’s request, and with similar accidental purpose — which didn’t prevent Shugo's brilliant constructions of loops, delay and toy instruments, to provoke nothing but awe and admiration.

The original review I wrote for Shugo Tokumaru's 2004 debut, that spritely guitar-pop mini-album called Night Piece, got shot back to me. A Tokyo twentysomething whisking through his own soundscapes, losing himself in the cinema, shooting guns at wild west bad guys, battle rapping-- apparently it wasn't criticism.
Give Shugo a chance to snap "Mist" out its woozy lullablahs; his sudden, close-mic'd guitar strums grit forcefully like the opening moments of Microphones' It Was Hot.
This time Shugo's pushed it into the instrument mix further, sometimes even pitting it against the intermittent noisemaking that normally stays beneath the guitar lines.

Mostly created from acoustic instruments with some light electronic accents, this Tokyo bedroom producer's record could quite possibly be some of the sweetest 25-minutes of music you'll hear this year.
The instruments are often conventional, but the sound never strays from surprise and bewilderment: Acoustic guitars are almost never strummed, but pluck out exact rhythms and slide from note to note in amazing melodies.

The shogunate rested on an alliance with local military leaders (shugo), who gradually became powerful regional rulers.
The great shugo, however, became increasingly involved in the politics of the shogunate, and by the mid-15th century many had lost control of their provincial bases.
Beginning as a dispute over the shogunal succession, it turned into a general civil war in which the great shugo exhausted themselves fighting in and around Kyoto, while the provinces fell into the hands of other shugo and eventually under the control of new lords called daimyo.
