LMS diesel shunters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
LMS diesel shunter 1831 was the original experimental shunter, nominally rebuilt from a Midland Railway steam locomotive originally built in September 1892 by the Vulcan Foundry, whose number it inherited (1831), though very little of the steam locomotive was actually re-used.
LMS diesel shunter 7050 carried its original number of 7400 only within the Preston works where it was built, and was delivered as number 7050.

GSR Rule 55   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Where other appliances are provided for the purpose of communicating with the Signalman, the Guard, Shunter or Fireman must immediately make use of such appliances, but if an acknowledgement is not received the provisions of the preceding paragraph must be carried out.
In the case of single lines, if the Driver is in possession of the train staff or electric token, it will not be necessary for the man to go to the signal box to remind the Signalman of the position of the train in connection with trains detained at home signals.
(e) Sufficient time must be allowed for the Guard, Shunter or Fireman to rejoin the train before the signal is lowered, and the Driver must not, when the signal is lowered, go forward until he has received a hand signal from the Guard or Shunter to intimate that he has rejoined the train.

 Bulleid 350hp Shunter/Class 12
Class 08, Class 09 and Class 11 shunters (and also those constructed by the GWR), had larger 4ft 6in diameter "Bulleid-Firth Brown" type wheels, (the same size as used by Maunsell on his 1937 diesel shunters) as opposed to the 4ft 2in, normally spoked variety used on the others.
Bulleid's shunters had a central dual controlled desk, as in current practice, but in order to start the engine oil had first to be pumped up to engage the pressure switch.
A more powerful, 500hp, diesel mechanical shunter was developed in 1950 which could run at the higher line speed of 45mph, though this proved to be a "Jack of all trades, master of none" and did not progress beyond a single prototype.

 Matchbox shunter for 009
I have been a somewhat inactive modeller for some years (but will be modelling again shortly), but I thought other modellers might be interested in a small loco I built a few years back.
I'm not sure why Matchbox should have produced a plastic version when all other production seems to be have been die-cast, but as it was cheap, I decided to purchase it to see if it could be used with a little modification, which would be a bit easier with a plastic version.
The Matchbox shunter is a one-piece moulding not based on any prototype in particular, but it does look quite British.

Of interest is the fact that the Dutch railways (NS) tried-out both the jackshaft and the twin-motor versions of the LMSR/WD shunters, and preferred the twin-motor version, and purchased some secondhand.
