Shurikenjutsu (手裏剣術) is a Japanese martial art of throwing shuriken: knives, dirks and "ninja stars".
Shurikenjutsu was a skill practiced by many Japanese schools of martial arts.
Some styles of shurikenjutsu that are still practiced today are Negishi ryū and Meifu Shinkage ryū.

Shurikenjutsu is the art of targeting and throwing bladed weapons.
The most common shuriken used are bo (spike, with one or two impact points) and senban or hira (flat, multi-pointed) blades.
As the students' experience in shurikenjutsu increases, the awareness that any hand-held object can be pressed into service as shuriken becomes apparent.

Fujita Seiko: The Last Koga Ninja
By the time he was 18 years old, Inoue had a good understanding of Jujutsu, Shurikenjutsu (projectile throwing), and Jojutsu (short staff).
While there is clear evidence that Inoue did learn a great deal from Fujita, Inoue neither claimed to have learned, nor is there any evidence to suggest that Fujita passed on the secrets of Koga Ryu Wada Ha to his young apprentice.
In 1948, Iwata was endowed by Fujita with the title of soke, commanding him to assume all of the hereditary knowledge of Fujita's Nanban Sato Ryu Kenpo and Shingetsu-Ryu Shurikenjutsu.

TAKEDA RYU SHURIKENJUTSU   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
In TAKEDA RYU, SHURIKENJUTSU, the art of throwing spikes, is very strongly combined to the swordsmanship which means that SHURIKEN hardly have been used as a weapon in its own.
It was mostly used to confuse the opponent in order to prepare a more efficient attack by sword.
That is the reason why a lot of the exercises are executed at short distance.

Fujita Seiko: The Last Koga Ninja
The book title, which was published 11 years after Fujita elevated Iwata to the position of soke of Nanban Sato Ryu Kenpo and Shingetsu Ryu Shurikenjutsu, implies that even at this late date, he had not passed his Koga Ryu Wada Ha system onto any of his students or martial arts colleagues.
Additional support for this conclusion is also available in a 1963 interview with the official authority on the history of Japanese martial traditions, the Bugei Ryuha Daijten, which at the time was gathering information from the heads of various traditional Japanese martial arts systems for its updated publication.
The entry of the statement into the record, whether factual or not, would relegate all future claimants to a linear inheritance of the system to the ranks of charlatans and con artists.

I studied and practiced Daito-ryu shurikenjutsu everyday for at least 2 hours a day, and at the end of each session Kato Sensei would come, see, and correct maybe a certain or certain other small (or larger) error I made.
They are very effective in piercing, since they are heavier than most other shurikens I've ever seen, but I guess they are still almost useless over 7 meters (20-25 feet) of distance from the target, which of course is a softer part of the human's body, like throat, hands, or else.
We know for sure Takeda Sokaku Sensei was a master of shurikenjutsu, and also had steel chopstick (very similar to the shuriken we use!) to use for atemi or throwing even while eating, but I don't know if this jutsu was incorporated in the art even before him.

Negishiryu Shurikenjutsu and Shirai Ryu originate in the same school: Ganritsuryu also called Ganryu, a complete school created in 1644 (20th year of the Kan-Ei.
There are also methods of using Shuriken starting from the sitting position, lying down, with a sword, in darkness, methods of hiding it, methods of using it in close combat.
Master Saito Satoshi, at the age of 19 (in 1941, 16th year of the Showa era), became a pupil of Naruse Kanji sensei, 3rd successor of Negishiryu Shurikenjutsu, practised under the direction Negishi Rryu and Shirai Ryu Shurikenjutsu [French not very clear here], also practised with Narusei Sensei Kuwana Handen Yamamoto Ryu Iaijutsu.
