Articles - Street racing   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Street races can also occur on expressways and highways, infamously in Japan, where they are known as kousoko battle and frequently occur on the Shuto Expressway in Tokyo.
The most notorious group to be associated with it was the MidNight Club who gave street racing a worldwide attention with its 198 mph (300 km/h) antics and was known for its high standards and organisation until they were disbanded in 1999 following a fatal accident involving a competing group of motorcyclists.
Nowadays, with heavier punishments, patrolling police cars and speed cameras, expressway racing in Japan is not as common as it was during the 80´s and 90´s but still occurs on a regular basis.

They actually had a motorcycle cop posted there, who flagged us down, pulled us over, and told us we had to take the Shibaura exit — which was kind of silly, because we were already signalling for it.

Alien Times | Main / Driving - An Adventure In Japan browse
Only two weeks in Japan, I had come into Tokyo on an April day in 1986 to pick up a car that my friend at the Canadian Embassy arranged to purchase for me. The '81 Isuzu was now in the embassy parking lot.
And the swaying of the expressway convinced me that the second 'great Kanto quake' was on.
An hour and a half later, my friend arrived with the good news that an entrance to the Shuto leading to the Joban was nearby.

Speaking of photography, after being lazy for the last couple of weeks, I have managed to upload a few days’ worth of photos, including a bunch from a bus tour the family took to Yamanashi prefecture a couple of hours away (though with traffic, it was a 4-hour trip each way).
Ironically, one of the highlights of the tour was the impressive whirlwind mini-tour of Tokyo I got in the morning as the bus made its way west out of the city via the Shuto Expressway, and the companion view at night as the bus returned to the city, reversing the morning route.
Passing through many of the main Tokyo hotspots, Ikebukuro, Korakuen and the Tokyo Dome, Kitanomaru Park and the Budokan, Akasaka, Meiji Shrine, Shinjuku, and being high-up on a bus already high up on the Expressway, I got a view of the magnificent and gigantic city that I hadn’t ever seen before.

R.I.P. For most of us, this game is the closest we'll ever get to street racing at night on the highways of Tokyo.
In fact, from what I've been told, this game is an exact replica of the Shuto expressway/business loop that circles the Imperial Palace and Tokyo Tower.
The whole game is based on this "street racer" premise with multiple cars to choose from, each of which can be configured using the standard "good, better, best" formula including the standard tweaks for tightening or loosening a configuration.
