Shutter (photography) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In photography, a shutter is a device that allows light to pass for a determined period of time, for the purpose of exposing photographic film or a light-sensitive electronic sensor to the right amount of light to create a permanent image of a view.
Central shutters usually have a diaphragm-like mechanism which progressively dilate to a circular opening the size of the lens, then stay open as long as is required, and finally close.
Cinematography uses a rotary disc shutter in movie cameras, a continuously spinning disc which conceals the image with a reflex mirror during the intermittent motion between frame exposure.

Shutter angle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The primary reason that cinematographers adjust the shutter angle is to control the amount of motion blur that is recorded on each successive frame of film.
In particular tight shutters are used to capture particles flying through the air, such as dirt from an exploding mortar.
Special shutter adjustments allow the film to be exposed while the camera mechanism is actually moving the film to the next frame.

 Video Camera Shutter
The speed at which the shutter opens and closes can be varied — the faster the speed, the shorter the period of time the shutter is open, and the less light falls on the film.
Shutter speed is measured in fractions of a second.
The shutter "opens" and "closes" once for each frame of video; that is, 25 times per second for PAL and 30 times per second for NTSC.

The shutter is a system comprising two parts; the mechanism which contains the motor, gears, feedback potentiometer, shaft and paddles; and the controller which consists of the motor drive electronics, the microprocessor, and the control software.
In the event that a shutter exceeds the allowed attempts in opening or closing, the operation is considered a failure, and the COUNT value is incremented.

Shutter Bee, The Animated Online Camera Tutorial
The shutter speed determines how long your film is exposed to light passing through the aperture: the slower the shutter speed, the longer the shutter remains open, the more light reaches your film.
Use a fast shutter speed (such as 1/500 sec) to freeze fast moving objects in their trajectory, or use a slow shutter speed (such as 1/2 sec) to illustrate movement by creating motion blur.
Due to the doubling/halving nature of both aperture and shutter settings, closing the aperture one stop (halving the light) while simultaneously decreasing the shutter speed by one setting (doubling the light) produces no effective change in the amount of light reaching your film.

 Shutter Speeds
Shutter speed is, apart from aperture, the other main component required to form a proper exposure.
Shutter speed means timing and duration of opening and closing of the shutter curtain at the back of the camera.
A shutter speed of 1/125 will allow one time more the amount of light to reach the film than 1/250, the amount of light is double on the next scale of 1/60 to 1/125 etc.

About Shutter Speeds   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
In my experience a leaf shutter in good condition is consistent, varying less than 1/6th of a stop for a given setting (overall not plus/minus).
It was also true for the shutter in a 100/2.8 lens on a Mamiya Universal, a Rolleiflex Compur in a 80/2.8 Xenotar, both a Xenar 150/4.5 and an Angulon 90/6.8 in Compur shutters for a Linhof Super Technica III.
If a shutter is not within the above kinds of tolerance, or it is hard to change the shutter speeds (except to the one or two highest speeds which often have a booster spring that cocks when you do so), or shows any kind of hesitation it needs servicing.

So the faster the shutter captures that image, the more likely the image being shot will be clear and sharp, while conversely a slow shutter speed will cause fast moving objects to blur.
So the video camera shutter is firing very fast as the recording media (video tape, DVD, memory chip) is being bombarded by the light which has been converted into data by a light sensing chip.

Discussions @ Nikonians - can the f2 or f3 be set between shutter speeds for corr
You cannot set your F2 or F3 between shutter speeds except for the 1/80th of a second maximum flash synch speed which is between 1/60th and 1/125th of a second.
If you primarily shoot print film, setting the shutter speed to the next lowest shutter speed (ie, 1/500th vs. 1/750th) you should be fine, as print film has more than enough latitude to give you excellent results with slight over exposure.
Use the F3 in Auto mode for stepless shutter speeds (it wont show in the finder btw), use your lens to pick a point to meter from and use the exposure lock and then recompose.
