	Space Shuttle (NASA) K-12 Background Information
		The Shuttle program was formally launched on January 5, 1972, when President Nixon announced that NASA would proceed with the development of a reusable Space Shuttle system.
		The Shuttle is a partially reusuable launch system composed of three main assemblies: the reusable Orbiter Vehicle (OV), the expendable External Tank (ET), and the two reusable Solid Rocket Boosters (SRBs).
		While the shuttle might safely endure a lightning strike, a similar strike caused problems on Apollo 12, so for improved safety NASA chooses to not launch the shuttle if lightning is possible.

		Earlier in September, an Air Serv Grand Caravan was the first aircraft to arrive in Jamaica in the aftermath of the Hurricane Ivan.

		The “Single-stage Earth-orbital Reusable Vehicle” (SERV) was the most unusual of all space shuttle concepts to emerge from the Phase A/B studies.
		Unlike the other shuttle concepts, SERV would have flown unmanned although it could be outfitted with several different kinds of spacecraft mounted on the nose of the SSTO vehicle, to provide for passenger flights.
		The payload vehicles would have separated from SERV in orbit and contained their own docking and in-orbit propulsion systems since SERV was not designed for docking with space stations.

	Shuttle SERV
		The 2,040 tonne SERV was designed to deliver a 53 tonne payload to orbit in a capacious 7 m x 18 m payload bay.
		The booster could be launched from the existing LC39 built for the Saturn V. SERV would be built at NASA's Michoud facility and transported by a 'Bay'-class vessel modified to carry the wide load through the existing inland waterway system between Michoud and Cape Canaveral.
		SERV was a squat 27.4 m in diameter and 20.3 m tall.

		The last chapter of the book is titled "The Next Generation" and discusses possible modifications to the Shuttle (liquid boosters, the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor), Shuttle derivatives (Shuttle C, Shuttle Z), possible Shuttle II configurations (aiming for full reusability), and the HL-20 personal launch system (for launch from a Titan IV).
		Much of the information on the current shuttle design is probably available elsewhere, but the information on the early design proposals has probably never been collected before.
		As a former Shuttle Engineer and one of the proof readers for this book, I was fairly astonished at detail and careful accuracy in the book.
