Shuttlecraft - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki
In starship classification, shuttlecraft, or shuttles, are auxiliary craft typically attached to a starship or a starbase.
Utilization of shuttlecraft is common for most spacefaring civilizations, especially for situations where the transporter cannot be used for landings, or where such technology does not yet exist.
Shuttlecraft range in size from the larger, longer-range, and more versatile type of shuttle, known as a runabout, to the small and short-range type of shuttle, known as a shuttlepod.

The Coffee Nebula - Voyager Scoreboards: Shuttlecraft Status
The short and eventful working life of Voyager's shuttlecraft is legendary.
Of the thirteen shuttlecraft lost so far, Chakotay has been responsible for the destruction of three of them, and has also been present at more than his fair share of near misses.
True, Tom Paris now has four shuttles chalked up to his account (or five if you count Dark Frontier's remote controlled one), but he is their best pilot and consequently the man in the hot seat for all the really dangerous shuttlecraft journeys, so he does at least have some excuse.

  TOS Shuttlecraft Galileo
Because the series had little extra budget after the effects work was finished the new design would have to be small, simple to build and at the same time project a futuristic feel in a manner consistent with a military organization such as Starfleet.
However, restoring it to its original configuration was never the intent, it was to appear as a model of a "standard type" Shuttlecraft seen in the background of one of the sets.
The computer model of the Shuttlecraft was built by Phil broad simply as a decoration for his CG Enterprise (see the Enterprise Computer Renderings).

Animated STAR TREK - Heavy Shuttlecraft   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Off-ship vehicle carried in and deployed from the hangar decks of Federation starships.
The heavy shuttlecraft is larger than the Galileo shuttlecraft and was better suited to travel though turbulent atmospheres and space-born energy disturbances such as ion storms.
This type of craft was referred to simply as a shuttlecraft in the episode, but it is termed a "Heavy" Shuttlecraft here, due to its size and bulky design and for lack of a definitive name.
