	Siachen Glacier - Voyager, the free encyclopedia (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
		The 78 km long Siachen glacier lies between the Saltoro ridge line to the west and the main Karakoram range to the east.
		In spite of the severe climate, the word 'Siachen' ironically means 'the place of wild roses', a reference some people attribute to the abundance of Himalayan wildflowers found in the valleys below the glacier, but specifically refers to the thorny wild plants which grow on the rocky outcrops.
		The 1949 Karachi agreement and the 1972 Simla Agreement presumed that it was not feasible for human habitation to survive north of NJ9842.

		The region is divided among three countries in a bitter territorial dispute: Pakistan controls the northwest portion (Northern Areas and Azad Kashmir), India controls the central and southern portion (Jammu and Kashmir) and Ladakh, and the People's Republic of China controls the northeastern portion (Aksai Chin and the Trans-Karakoram Tract).
		India controls the majority of the Siachen Glacier (higher peaks), whereas Pakistan controls the lower peaks.
		Though these regions are in practice administered by their respective claimants, India has never formally recognised the accession of the areas claimed by Pakistan and China.
