The Right Honourable Dame Sian Seerpoohi Elias, GNZM, (born March 12, 1949) is the Chief Justice of New Zealand, and is therefore the most senior member of the country's judiciary.
Dame Sian became a judge of the High Court in 1995, and occasionally sat on the Court of Appeal.
Dame Sian is married to Hugh Fletcher, currently Chancellor of Auckland University.

After graduating from The University of Auckland in 1972 with a LLB (Hons), Sian practised as a barrister 1975 - 1988, took silk in 1988, became a Judge of the High Court in 1995 and was appointed Chief Justice in 1999.
Sian has appeared in a number of Treaty of Waitangi Tribunal hearings, and also appeared as counsel in litigation relating to the Treaty, as well as many non-Treaty cases.
In 2003 Sian was appointed to the Supreme Court.

Sian Elias was born in London and came to New Zealand as a young child.
She graduated in law from Auckland University and, too young (at twenty) to be admitted to the Bar, then obtained a Masters in Law from Stanford University.
In 1995 Sian Elias was appointed a Judge of the High Court, where her judgment on a defamation case involving a former prime minister was significant in addressing the balance between the freedom of the press and the privacy of a citizen.

But High Court Justice Sian Elias said she merely fined Lindner because it was a small amount of drugs for his own use rather than for distribution, because he had no criminal record, and because he admitted he had a drug problem, the New Zealand Herald reported.
Justice Elias decided Lindner shouldn't become a drain on the Auckland community, and instead should return to the U.S. to address his addiction, the paper reported.
Elias was also told Lindner's wife and two children were unaware of his drug problem until the arrest.

Dame Sian said many witnesses relied on childhood memories of more than 50 years ago, were involved in the public speculation, were confused, had brief glimpses or distorted perception.
At a previous trial in 1996, Dame Sian had ruled that the Crown was in breach of a 1987 agreement to help find the tunnels and excavate them.
In her latest decision, Dame Sian said it was essential for Mr Earnshaw to prove there was a complex of tunnels containing the equipment he outlined in his statement of claim, and that the defendant's breach of contract had caused him to lose the opportunity to discover the tunnel and the items.

A CHRISTCHURCH man who asked a panel of Court of Appeal justices to declare their religious and social affiliations to assess any bias lost his bid to take his case to the Privy Council.
John Michael Collier had been declared a vexatious litigant by Chief Justice Sian Elias on March 31 last year.
This effectively froze any civil cases he was involved in and barred him from beginning any new ones.

Jubilant cheers erupted in the Supreme Court in Wellington today at news Algerian asylum seeker Ahmed Zaoui will be released on bail tonight.
Chief Justice Dame Sian Elias delivered the court's judgment this afternoon, allowing Mr Zaoui's appeal and granting him bail.
Bail conditions are that Mr Zaoui reside at the Dominican Friary in Newton, Auckland, and be present there between 10pm and 6am.
