		An Ancient Town Inland, to the east of Klaipeda stands the ancient town of Siauliai, which dates from the battle of Saule in 1236, when the first king of Lithuania, Mindaugas, united the local chieftains to resist the knights of the Livonian Order.
		But the story of Siauliai continued to be a violent one and much of the town was destroyed by wars or by fire over the succeeding centuries.
		The 750th anniversary of the battle was commemorated by the erection of a 21 m high sundial, topped by an archer of gilded bronze, which is one of the sights of Siauliai.
